We are looking like a third world country. This is unreal.
How could the United States of America get into a position where we look like some backwater republic?

Imagine, tens of thousands of our citizens in real danger of dying before our eyes. All this might and power and we can't even get our own people to safety over three days after a storm has ended.

My heart breaks for what George Bush and his stinking, selfish policies have allowed this once proud country to become.

America is spinning out of control.

7. Indeed.
Indeed, did anyone think during the tsunami disaster that we'd be in the same position mere months later? This is worse than the Iowa floods years ago. It'll be interesting to see how much help we get from other countries conasidering our ongoing unilateral solipsism and belligerence abroad. And, don't forget, Bush had originally pledged only $35,000,000 to tsunami relief, five million less than what his nine inaugural balls cost.

Of course, it's no surprise that with Bush, we'd start looking like a backwater (pun not intended) nation, considering how he'd slashed SELA funds for NO's levve and pump stations to divert to Iraq and are planning to do so again with next year's budget.

The administration is really taking a beating this summer, what with Plame/Rove, Cindy and now this Biblical flood. Of course, if the stakes weren't mortal, I'd be pleased to see the administration revealed as the pack of incompetent buffoons that they are.

2. A relative in Europe told me NOLA looks like Haiti during the coup
of Aristide. Same images of utter chaos, looting, devastation and complete LACK OF LEADERSHIP and properly coordinated relief efforts.

They watch the images of this on the BBC and yes, they can't believe they are coming from the USA instead of some third world nation.

3. Guess what? We ARE a third-world country.
45 million with no health insurance; poverty on the rise the past 4 years; unemployment skyrocketing; spending big $ to payoff political buddies rather than funding the projects that would help the common man; etc. It's all been there for those who want to know.

Katrina has simply ripped the veil away.

4. you are totally on the money there.
Maybe if we hadn't spent billions on Iraq and sent most of the reservists over there, we would be more prepared! I hate to think what might happen when a storm even bigger than Katrina hits! Short sighted businessmen!!

6. You would think these poor people were a fucking million miles away!
I'm so mad I can barely work the keys. We will see people dying before our eyes. Many of the old and some infants have already succumbed. In the best of conditions, the body can only last about 3 days without water and it's in the 90's down there. This is horrible.
