Is this as bad as it gets, or can it get worse?
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 05:04 PM by Husb2Sparkly
It seems every time we think we have the seen the bottom of the depths to which we've fallen, it gets worse.

Can it get any worse? And Dear God, if it can, what would it look like?

17. Beat me to it. Welcome to Choleraland, kiddies!
And if that's not enough, you have rancid, contaminated water, rampant filth, rats, and fleas. Remember what happened last time there were a lot of unwanted rats and fleas in with the contamination and filth? The Black Death.

Are we having fun yet?

Visualize IMPEACHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pass it on...

They can collect it and drink it ...... unlike the cesspool they have to stand in.

3. Sure it can get worse and it probably will.
Disease will set in as the water becomes polluted, more people will die waiting to be rescued or for food or water, riots will continue as people become more distraught and angry, hospitals will continue to loose patients because of not having electricity and the water will not be able to be pumped out due to lack of energy.

Comforting thoughts... Those poor people...

6. A helluva lot worse, I'm afraid
disease, real lawlessness, the logistical problem of providing help to the displaced, the mental health issues. And a president unable to lead.

19. You have an increasingly desperate population there.
Desperate people do desperate things. I'm surprised there hasn't been rioting and more shooting incidents already.

My husband says that, considering the timeline here, now that it's Thursday and we've had days of this, incubating in the heat and humidity and the filth, diarrhea should be setting in REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL nice, just about now. If indeed it hasn't already. Probably already epidemic among the babies, toddlers, and elderly there, as we speak.

7. Sure it can get worse. While N.O. dies something else happens.
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 05:09 PM by kenny blankenship
Earthquake shakes downtown Los Angeles, large buildings collapse, fires rage across city...

White supremacist group sets off nerve gas bombs in NY subways.

Assassination sparks military coup in Saudi Arabia, world oil price soars to $100/bbl.

Bush goes back to Presidentin' with GOP controlled Congress coming back into regular session.

It can get worse you betcha. (AT least one of these disasters is certain to happen in the near term)

35. You got that right.
That was EXACTLY my thought earlier today. No matter what happens, WE ARE ON OUR OWN. The Bush administration is into one thing: looting the treasury. They have their own agenda.

It's just purely accidental that they are being asked to "protect the people".

We should all realize that we could be next. We are quickly becoming a 3rd World Country, where IT'S THE LAW OF THE JUNGLE. Survival of the fittest.

and "take them out" a la Pat Robertson. That's what they'd like to do . . . except for the housekeepers, nannies, gardeners and pool guys.

15. Sadly, it will get worse, MUCH worse
But keep in mind that it really has to get worse in order for it to get better. People who a few days ago tried to avoid politics now openly HATE Bush. Even many of his former supporters, who tried as hard as they could to give him every benefit of the doubt, are realizing how horrible he is. Cindy Sheehan was the first sign that Bush might be nothing more than a useless coward. Katrina confirmed that he in fact IS a useless coward, without a clue how to lead.

It's horrible that this has to happen, but it must. I really hope that after the smoke clears, we will finally see the end of the Fascist Neoconservative movement.

18. All that rain that Katrina dropped as it went up the middle of the country
has to drain somewhere. Most of it will end up in the Mississippi River and flow right down to New Orleans. A National Guard General was talking about that Monday on CNN, but I haven't heard much else about it.

Of course, there is the coming outbreak of disease, the infestation of mosquitos. Cholera, maleria, West Nile?

And a guy on CNN at the Convention Center just told Wolf Blitzer that if the Army or National Guard shows up, they better bring a community leader to talk to the people there, or the gangs with guns are likely to take offense at being ordered around and start shooting.

And there are ways it will get worse that we haven't even thought of yet.

How many other things can be piled on top of this?

Any other severe disaster, natural or otherwise, would break an already extremely strained ability to respond. This is a very grave situation.

23. It gets worse tomorrow
and the day after that and the day after that.

Today marks the 4th day in unbearable heat without drinking water for many of those poor people. They will begin to die in larger and larger numbers.

Without intervention in the next 24-48 hours, the deaths will spike up and continue to do so each day.

The ones that find enough water to make it through the next few days will begin to get sick. Without intervention, they too will die in increasing numbers.

It's going to get a lot worse. Brace yourselves. Hug your children.

24. Real world experiment re: effects of martial law and chaor in US?
http://www.legitgov.org/

"It was suggested to me by someone that it seems like the lack of assistance in New Orleans was meant to provoke people to extreme violence and chaos. It certainly looks that way to me... but what if new orleans is being used as a test case to see, in a real world setting, how easily a motivated, angry populace (and the military personnel forced to do the dirty work) could be subdued and controlled to create a working model of how to impose endless Martial Law throughout the country while keeping those who might resist under the lid... and those in the armed forces in line. It's a thought... because I find it absolutely incredible how inept the response has been... to the point of criminality on the part of the federal government." --c., CLG reader.

28. I have been curious
about the same thing...and wondering why? what could be the purpose? nothing happens w/o purpose...NO ONE can tell me, that after 9/11, this country, with it's new Homeland Security Dept...could possibly be this far off the mark with help..I'm not buying it..something is dangerously off kilter in this situation...and I'de say, we better be paying very close attention...
