WASHINGTON (AP) -- It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.

"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," the Illinois Republican said in an interview Wednesday with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Democratic Sen. Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana issued a statement to "disagree strongly" with Hastert, and he sought to clarify his comments during the day.

Hastert, in a transcript supplied by the suburban Chicago newspaper, said there was no question that the people of New Orleans would rebuild their city, but noted that federal insurance and other federal aid was involved. "We ought to take a second look at it. But you know we build Los Angeles and San Francisco on top of earthquake fissures and they rebuild too. Stubbornness."

It's their fault that the city was built on that location 250 some odd years ago. It's their fault that they are Poor. They should have gotten in their cars that they do not have, and driven out of the city to go to the places they did not have to go to, or at least go to a hotel with the money and credit cards that they do not have.

So I agree with Denny.
