It's a pretty popular site. But so is DU. I'm sure many "journalists" look through DU to understand what Dems are thinking.

3. Odds are it's mostly used to try to defuse things.

For instance, when a talking point is seen through, then they switch talking points. Or when some damning piece of information comes bubbling up through DU, they hand down orders to Ft. Bragg to send psyops agents out to spin it.
