"I'm not looking forward to this trip," Bush said as he toured Alabama and Mississippi and headed for Louisiana. "It's as if the entire Gulf Coast were obliterated by the worst kind of weapon you can imagine," he said.

Even Republicans were criticizing Bush and his administration for the sluggish relief effort. "I think it puts into question all of the Homeland Security and Northern Command planning for the last four years, because if we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?" said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

He urged Bush to name former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as the White House point person for relief efforts. Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., also suggested Giuliani or former Secretary of State Colin Powell or retired Gen. Tommy Franks to take charge of the relief efforts.

In Biloxi, Miss., Bush encountered two weeping women on a street where a house had collapsed and towering trees were stripped of their branches. "My son needs clothes," said Bronwynne Bassier, 23, clutching several trash bags. "I don't have anything." "I understand that," Bush said. He kissed both women on their heads and walked with his arms around them, telling them they could get help from the Salvation Army. "Hang in there," he said.

2. Puh-leeeze. Gingrich revealed his motive in the very next sentence....
... by suggesting Giuliani be put in charge of relief efforts.

Apparently, Newtie's part of the Giuliani for President planning committee.

4. yeah - he probably does have a motive
but GDammit - i don't care at this point, get someone with some sense of competency in charge of relief efforts. I don't care if it is Rudy - or Colin - get somebody that can manage the relief efforts!

5. I think it's the Gingrich for president committee
actually.
Still it's good to see Republicans attacking Bush.

9. You may be right, BUT...
...the concept of "If bush can't handle Katrina, how can he handle the follow-up to 9/11" is one that I applaud.

I don't care about "secondary agendas" behind it. I don;t think of Newt as Ivory Soap (99.9/10% pure).

WHATEVER his reasons for saying it...he SAID it, and it made it into the MSM.

That's good enough for me.

8. that was my first thought, warts,
but what if they had made a rubbing of the kiss mark and auctioned it on Ebay? Might as well make some money off the asshole. The cult of the Chimp might have bid this sky high.

6. Always has to have that military connotation from someone who
avoided the military in his booze-hound days.
