I posted this on an email site I'm on in response to an appeal to give money to the Red Cross.

I appreciate the honest concern and heartfelt feeling displayed by these appeals but...

This is EXACTLY the kinds of thing that our goddamn TAXES are supposed to be for. We are a nation of people who have decided that the burden of paying for some large concerns should be shared by all, right?

The millions of dollars cut by the fascist bush team for the prevention of this kind of disaster (in fact, THIS disaster) will now have to be made up with BILLIONS of tax dollars while the liar in chief calls for PRIVATE contributions to save the situation and drags his f*cking feet by NOT supplying actual direct aid to the victims.

What a crock of SHIT!!!

The Red Cross will be able to raise at most a couple hundred million dollars (mainly from people who can ill afford it) while the bandits who got the tax breaks don't have to pay SHIT. Then on top of that, those of us who have had more of the tax burden laid on us so the rich can get richer will be paying back the BILLIONS for years!!!

Tell me, what's wrong with this picture!!!

Send your money instead to any of the dozens of effective organizations who are working tirelessly to defeat the forces of evil. How about the ACLU, MoveOn, Democratic Underground, PDA, etc. Then take your time to flood the white house and the Congress with letters, emails and phone calls DEMANDING immediate, effective Federal aid for the victims of the greatest natural disaster since the '06 earthquake in San Francisco.

Your dollars will be MUCH more effective by spending them that way.
