We've Just Seen The Tip Of The Iceberg.......
in the weeks to come - after all the refugees are shuttled out of NOLA and the water recedes - we will watch as bodies are found and counted - all over the disaster area. We will hear all kinds of horror stories. The death toll will be staggering. You ain't seen nothing yet.

that are equal members of a family-

like that little fella's 'Snowball' at the Astrodome-
that one killed me..... they managed to get his dog all the way with him to Houston, and wouldn't let his dog in, he wept and sobbed till he vomited...... i've done that.... and it's what seems like the stupidist little thing... but its the death of hope, and innocence... and a part of his soul....

sorry....

I wish like hell my dog were president- he'd have carried every person out of there himself, even at age 13- and growing up with rowdy boys who have run him hard (as he has them)

on Faux.

A crying Geraldo says the people at the Convention Center should just walk, just walk out to get away from the hell hole. An outraged Shepard says - they can't, at the end of this road there is a checkpoint and they are turning everyone away and back into the city who tries to walk out.

Homeland Security won't let Red Cross deliver food
Saturday, September 03, 2005
By Ann Rodgers, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05246/565143.stm

As the National Guard delivered food to the New Orleans convention center yesterday, American Red Cross officials said that federal emergency management authorities would not allow them to do the same.

Other relief agencies say the area is so damaged and dangerous that they doubted they could conduct mass feeding there now.

"The Homeland Security Department has requested and continues to request that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans," said Renita Hosler, spokeswoman for the Red Cross.

"Right now access is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities. We have been at the table every single day . We cannot get into New Orleans against their orders."

meanwhile - where are the DEMS on this? oh yeah - they are still trying to find their balls and spines

26. The Red Cross quote is horrifying.
Hurricane Katrina: Why is the Red Cross not in New Orleans?

* Access to New Orleans is controlled by the National Guard and local authorities and while we are in constant contact with them, we simply cannot enter New Orleans against their orders.

* The state Homeland Security Department had requested--and continues to request--that the American Red Cross not come back into New Orleans following the hurricane. Our presence would keep people from evacuating and encourage others to come into the city.

http://www.redcross.org/faq/0,1096,0_682_4524,00.html

Add to that:

The people are not allowed to leave.
The military left.

At www.wwl.com. They call it United Radio, think that several of the local NO stations have banded together to provide coverage from an off-site location. Give a bit different perspective, not all looters and fires. You might also try www.bbc.co.uk to get a UK perspective, they have good spot reports that you can wrap your head around.

In the Bush era the US Gov't won't release anything but US troop deaths...all others uncounted or unreleased...this way they claim low casualty rates, unless "insurgents" are involved (then the numbers are inflated somewhat.)

it's a strange kind of math, but it seems to keep the sheep in a flock...

happened vs. the number of people who died or will die waiting for rescues, water, food, medical care. I'm sure we will never know but if autopsies were done to determine the time of death of people .... This is absolutely unfathomable.

35. Yesterday, I think it was on CNN, Blitzer was talking by phone to a
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 07:43 AM by Pirate Smile
reporter in Baton Rouge. (I've heard earlier that the population of Baton Rouge has doubled because of all the evacuees who are there and now don't have anywhere to return.

Blitzer asked the reporter a question (I can't remember what it was) and he answered it, Blitzer said "thanks" and tried to move on, the reporter interrupted, saying (paraphrasing) "wait, there are problems brewing here, there...." and Blitzer interrupted him and said "thank you, now we go to...." and he moved on.

I don't think Blitzer heard the reporter. He was probably listening to his ear piece but the fact that the reporter really seemed to think he needed to get some information out about what was going on up in Baton Rouge grabbed my attention. I never heard anything else to know exactly what the reporter wanted to tell everyone.

They are so unprepared and unable to help the hundreds of thousands of displaced people, I'm afraid all kinds of things are going to spiral out of control and I'm not even talking about the people still on roofs, balconies, attics and in clusters throughout the city still waiting to get out.

You know, I so despise Bush and his policies but this country desperately NEEDS him to be a competent president to deal with this catastrophe and once again, he is failing beyond all imagination.

It isn't partisan, it isn't politics, it is just the most basic life and death, the most basic requirements that a people needs from its government and it isn't happening. It feels like we may fail in dealing with the people who have actually GOTTEN AWAY from the disaster areas. I hope I'm so wrong. I know there are many, many people working their hearts out to try and help but this problem is so huge, it needs a huge, concerted, humane, federal effort.

Right now, I just flipped by all the news station. I stopped on Faux (because the others are at a commercial) and they are interviewing a man, Dr. Manny Alverez, running a Salvation Army center full of people. He said the conditions are deteriorating. These people have still had no showers, no where to go, he is saying supplies are "adequate but not good" but it will be a problem in a few days. He said there are so many people with medical needs but without medical records. He said he has volunteered to medically evaluate the people (paraphrasing) because they can't get anyone else to do it. All the Doctors at all the hospitals are totally overworked and haven't had any breaks and on and on and on.

The shelters are going to become problems.

50. Here's how they fudge the numbers:
create all kinds of different categories to put deaths into, and then only release the totals from one category. For example:

• people who died during the actual hurricane on Monday (this group will be small so this number will be released)

• people who died of some pre-existing medical condition after Monday (this group will be large, but it will be said they would have died anyway, so don't count it - Rummy will have some statistic on normal metropolitan daily deaths)

• people who drowned on Tuesday

• people who drowned on Wednesday

• people who drowned on Thursday, etc.

• people who drowned sometime, don't know when

• missing people (who's bodies were eaten by rats because they weren't cleaned up, but who knows?? they may have fled to Mexico so you can't really count them, right???)

• people who died of dehydration

• people who died in fires

• people who died after encounters with wildlife (snakes, gators, rats)

and I'm sure Karl Rove will think of some more categories. Basically, you will NEVER know the total of ALL deaths, only select categories will be shown. Probably less then 5,000 will be allowed to be listed as dead from this event.
