During two of the 2000 stump speeches Gov Bush said the most evil phrase I’ve ever heard:
“the main difference between me and my opponent is he believes in the federal government, we don’t”
These words and image are burned into my brain. I can still hear the syncopation, see him sashay across the platform, and then stop and proudly saunter back while the crowd goes absolutely wild. It’s a mini-climax in the speech.
Here’s what I propose we do. We run that clip and then ask:
Mr President, do you even know the name of the federal government?
We make him answer that one question.
The stump speeches were consecutive, I think Oct 27 and 29 real close to the end (tough campaign for him against Gore) and he was really letting his hair down. Then somebody reeled him back in. I remember looking for them on CSPAN archive but they’re missing.
They would have to come from another source. Also, I distinctly remember John McCain and Colin Powell on the dais. In the Midwest, Missouri may be. Can the tapes be found?
I swear that’s what he said, he said it twice.
I gotta go - chew on it for a while. I'll try to get back tonight.
