My wife and I were married in New Orleans; it was our favorite city.

We loved the food, the music, the people, and the lively multicultural atmosphere. And now it's all pretty much gone. It's just about the saddest thing I could think of. I'm so sorry for all those poor people who've been trapped there without food, water or safe shelter since the storm. God help them, because the fucking government sure isn't doing much. I know that DU is an extremely generous, put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is community, butplease--give all you can to the Red Cross and other reality-based organizations that are trying to help people in New Orleans and Mississippi. Christ, this is just so incredibly distressing.

1. NO was also one of my favorite cities in the US; totally different

from anyplace else. I hope they rebuild and fix the levees so that this can't happen again. Sure, they will get more hurricanes, but maybe not as much damage. I've already donated to the Red Cross and 2 orgs for our furry friends, but will kick this for others.

Yeah--it was like a cross between Rio and Marseilles or something, but everyone (mostly) spoke English and the food was better. It's just heartbreaking, watching it die. I hope you're right--I hope the spirit of Old New Orelans will find a way to live on.

3. New Orleans was the city we honeymooned in two years ago.

We were putting cash aside to go back next summer. We have given that money to relief efforts. It breaks our hearts. It just breaks out hearts. We usually love looking at our honeymoon pictures and remembering how incrediable New Orleans is, how once you've been there, you can't shake it off your brain. Now, I can't look at the pictures without being so incrediably sad.

4. I'm with you.

We got married out in the Garden District and my wife and I and all the guests rode the St. Charles streetcar to Canal Street after the service in our wedding clothes. We threw beads to people on the berm; people applauded and took our pictures. It was a great day. Then we had our wedding dinner at the Grill Room in the Windsor Court Hotel--it was a four star restaurant, truly amazing--and the executive chef came out and toasted us. We went back for our first anniversary and just had a ball. There's just no place like it--and I don't think there ever will be again.
