In this excerpt, Jackson ariives at a shelter in Alexandria with a bus full of 150 people who had been stranded at the New Orleans Airport. With Jackson is U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, her husband, Ambassador Sydney Williams, chair of the Louisiana Black Caucus Cedric Richmond, and State Sen. Cleo Fields, and Stephen Elliott (the Salon writer of this piece).

When we arrive, police surround the buses and refuse to let anyone off. "They're treating us like prisoners," Charlie's aunt says.

"You will absolutely not get off this bus," an officer says. When Jesse Jackson gets out of the front car he's immediately accosted by a shelter resident.

"You can't bring those types of people here," the man shouts. "Those are rapists and looters."

"Now hold on," Jesse says. "Get the hell out of here," the man says. The police guard the buses but make no move to stop the man, who seems like he might attack the Reverend. "It's not a race thing," the man continues. "My wife is half-black." He points to a pregnant woman standing nearby. "We don't want your kind. This is a good place."

This from the far NE corner of Texas/SW corner of Arkansas. Texakana has its share of rednecks, both overt and glossed over in a society veneer, but the list of churches and agencies from both sides of the state line is quite heartening. The big downtown white church (where the Ark Governor used to preach) as well as the huge black church are helping. The big suburban churches on both sides are also pitching in. Good people on all sides of the divides that this misAdministration tries to exploit will ignore their individual differences to help those among us that are in need.

brings up in me. These poor people... Wasn't it Jesus who supposedly said, "What you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me."? Well, that's something I took to heart at a very young age, and I haven't changed my mind yet. The Rev. Jesse Jackson and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., tried to deliver the roughly 150 people to the Louisiana National Guard Armory in Rapides Parish, which already was sheltering about 600 evacuees.

The group was turned away by the president of the Central Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross. Leeann Murphy said there wasn't enough room at the armory. Then a white man emerged from the shelter saying he didn't want "murderers and rapists" there. He was alluding to reports of rapes and other violence at the Superdome and convention center in New Orleans.

A black woman asked the man how could he assume the people on buses were criminals. It wasn't clear whether the man was staying at the shelter.

"I've been in the Superdome since Sunday. You have no idea what it was like. Nobody wanted to help us." I wonder if it's relevant to point out that she is white. Most of the people on the buses aren't."

I would not do it, because other people need these leaders more, but I really, really want to.

I heard Jackson speak in Columbus, Ohio after the election was stolen last November - he led the crowd in a chant, "I am SOMEBODY! I am SOMEBODY!" I had not remembered that this is Jackson's signature. It will take generations to undo the damage to the public psyche - obviously, especially our African American sisters and brothers - done by the murderous negligence of the * administration.

Not that there aren't any -- there are, naturally. But some years ago (1993) I arrived in Alexandria, with one other individual, to protest a NAAWP march (National Association for the Advancement of WHITE People) that was proceeding through the middle of town.

The marchers were a pathetic lot. Nine or ten of them, including (heartbreakingly) a couple kids. We held our signs and they held theirs.

The two of us protesters were arrested as the 'march' turned to pass through a black part of town -- the notion, according to the cops, that they didn't want anybody to be 'provoked'. Or something like that. Ha!

Also, they said the marchers had a parade permit, and we didn't. But we were on the sidewalk --

So they hauled us off in cop cars and dumped us back at our cars, as I remember it.

Anyhow, word of my arrest got out around the local school district where I was teaching, and I got called in to the head of personnel for the Parish school system (a public school; they don't have counties in LA, but parishes). The guy examined me sort of disbelievingly. Then I noticed that he had a David Duke audio tape on his desk, with the label pointing out to be easily seen as such. Just so I'd know where he stood on the matter.

But I got to keep my job, which surprised me.
