4. "And I'm PROUD to be an American, where at least I can be free"
Sing along everyone with shots of the poorest among us screaming in desperation for rescue, for water, for food.

8. Do you have a list that might describe why one should be proud...
right now? I certainly cannot think of a single reason, other than the intelligent people on this board, who recognize bullshit when they see it (as in *).

10. Who is "we", and what agenda are you talking about?
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 12:41 PM by Don Claybrook
I speak for myself. I assume that the original poster does the same. Who do you speak for?

Did anyone mention that this post was supposed to be a party platform plank, becuse I missed it if they did.

And are you proud to be an American right now? If so, why? Please be specific.

By the way, Lee Greenwood's bus left the terminal with black smoke belching from the exhaust a long time ago, but he's just beginning to realize it.

Edited to helpfully add: the word you're attempting to use should be spelled "s t r a i g h t" in the future.

22. What I Do not Like
The thing I dislike about Greenwood is that he wrote this song even though he dodged the draft by getting a deferment for being married and having kids.

25. What I do not like is the snide remarks he made to me at a
fundraiser.

There was, obviously, a Dolly Parton look-a-like there. There's always one and she's much more of a megastar than he'll ever be (and a hell of a lot nicer and more sincere).

So, he looks square at me and says in the most condesending voice, "Damn, it must be nice to be able to get away with sending a look-alike to these events."

I do not like this little man who uses his wife's fake boobs and his huge SUV to make himself seem larger.

12. I ask myself "What was Lee smoking when he recorded this?"
Artist: Lee Greenwood
Title: Proud To Be An American

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.
And no help whatsoever from Oedipal, substance-abusing, fake "Christian" George W. Bush, woo woo wooo...

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘ Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.
They can take away fair elections, and keep people of color from voting, but they can't touch my flag, woo woo wooo...

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
I won't give them proper equipment, I'll extend their tour of duty, I'll cut their medical benefits and screw over their families, but I wo-OH-on't forget them, woo wooo...

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
And I bought a BITCHIN' Chevey Silverado pickup with my tax cut from President Bush, woo wooo...

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.
Except for New Orleans, of course, which is now strewn with neglected bodies of the dead, feces, vermin, homes blown apart by Katrina, woo woo wooo...

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.
It's time we say IMPEACH THAT WORTHLESS MOTHERF**KER GEORGE W. BUSH, and say it with PRIDE, woo woo wooo...

That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
I'll use them for photo ops on my way to my next FIVE WEEK VACATION, woo woo wooo...

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
I'll gladly stand next to you for a photo op if it will get the fucking media off my back, woo woo wooo...

And I’m proud to be and American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
I won't forget them, because I'm a chickenhawk piece of shit who never had to suit up and strap on a gun and risk my life, I just sang this tuneless piece of shit song, woo woo wooo...

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
BUY MY RECORD, ladies and gentlemen, and don't forget to order the chicken fingers and curly fries, woo woo wooo...

Especially when I saw the vanity plates on cars that were designed for 9-11. they are headlined "America Remembers". I wanted to scrawl the word WHAT across them.

18. Didn't he record that for Poppy because of Gulf War....
I'm trying to remember when and too lazy to Google.

That song might have sounded great to folks in another time...but it rings hollow today after Iraq and now Katrina. I expect it will be a relic before the "Emperor's" second term is over.

28. This became the Reagan battle song for his second election
It was played over and over again with patriotic images of firemen and little blonde girls and happy shining faces (99% white) and of course a gazillion American flags. I call it a battle song because of its refrain:

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

In essence, the guys who play this song over and over are vowing to join the military and go where ever the commander in chief tells them they should go to "protect our freedoms."

Of course, that's the last thing the red state people want to do. They just want to sing their patriotic songs, fly ragged American flags from their car roofs and think that sticking a magnetic sticker on their car means they're "supporting the troops."

And I'll give you odds that Lee Greenwood never served a minute in the military, gladly or not.
