The Second Civil War, Why * Wants to Federalize the South
Cant be that he wants to cover up how badly FEMA fucked up. He can get his lackeys at FOX and CNN and the WSJ to spin the news to reflect any "truth" Karl Rove wants. Why does * want the Feds to take over the Katrina ravaged area so badly?

Could it be money? There will be a lot of money spent rebuilding. Right now, the states will control who gets to rebuild roads, utilities, buildings. They will probbaly choose local builders and hire local workers if at all possible. If the feds take over, * can hire Halliburton and his buddies from Texas and anyplace else he chooses.

Then, there is the possibility that * would prefer not to rebuild low cost housing. Maybe he has visions of turning the Gulf Coast into a playground for the upper middle class and rich. Get rid of that pesky Democratic vote. Keep just enough workers housing to keep the oil, shipping and fishinh industries going but keep out the rest of the rabble.

Of course, if * takes over, he will bring in Guiliani, and let him hold press conferences in preparation for a presidential run in 2008. Or maybe brother Jeb. Or both. There is a Bush family dream ticket.

However, what * does not seem to realize is that Blanco and a whole lot of southerners (including up til now GOP voting southerners in Missisippi and Alabama) would rather drown in dirty swamp water and get eaten by gaters than see Yankees take over the south again as it did for 30 years during Reconstruction.

So, Rove and *, keep getting on MSNBC and talking about how you want to federalize the relief effort in the South. Keep bad mouthing local government efforts. The people of the South have seen the occupation of Iraq. They have your number. They are going to vote Democratic in 2006.

2. Interesting point
after the Civil War, no Southerner would vote Republican, because that party freed the slaves and, worse yet, instituted Reconstruction. Could be that the mishandling of Katrina's disaster could make more of the South turn blue again.

4. Correction. It wasn't because they freed the slaves.
It was because of Reconstruction. Slavery was a minor issue considering most Southerners didn't OWN slaves. That was reserved for the ultra wealthy.

It was about states rights.

5. Actually slavery was THE economic point since cotton wealth derived
from slavery and without cotton plantations the south was plunged into widespread poverty instead of patchy poverty.

But that is beside the point here. Reconstruction, whatever it started as, ended up becoming much like the British occupation of Ireland.

3. OMG! Let him try!
The South fought the Civil War to free its states from the grip of nationalism - and those sentiments haven't died in 200 years.

I hope to God that BushCo. tries this stupid move. It will cost them elections for years to come!

....but the Pentagon is all new and improved to do this to it's own people now...it's the poor and destitude that'll be on the receiving end of this instead of the politians who've made it so...same as it ever was...

In 1814 we took a little trip,
Along with colonel jackson down the mighty mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans,
And we fought the bloody british in the town of new orleans.

We fired our guns and the british kept a comin’,
There wasn’t ’bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin’
On down the mississippi to the gulf of mexico.

Oh we looked down the river and we seen the british come.
There must have been a hundred of ’em beatin’ on a drum.
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring.
We stood behind our cotton bales and didn¹t say a thing.

Old hickory said we could take ’em by surprise,
If we didn¹t fire our muskets till we looked ’em in the eyes.
We held our fire till we seen their faces well,
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and gave ’em a little...well....we...

....fired our guns and the british kept a comin’,
There wasn’t ’bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin’
On down the mississippi to the gulf of mexico.

We fired our cannons till the barrels melted down,
Then we grabbed an alligator and we fired another round.
We filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind,
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

We fired our guns and the british kept a comin’,
There wasn’t ’bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin’
On down the mississippi to the gulf of mexico.

We fired our guns and the british kept a comin’,
There wasn’t ’bout as many as there was awhile ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin’
On down the mississippi to the gulf of mexico.
