Rice Defends Bush Against Charges Of Racial Bias

Mobile, Ala. (AHN) – Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defends President Bush against criticism that the government's sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina shows racial injustice and discrimination against blacks.

"Nobody, especially the president, would have left people unattended on the basis of race," she says on Sunday as she tours damaged parts of her native Alabama.

"I just hope that when people stop and think about it, they will just see that that's just not the case," Rice says. "How can that be the case? Americans don't want to see Americans suffer." Rice was attending services at the Pilgrim Rest AME Zion church outside Mobile and visiting a community center in the ravaged Bayou La Batre, 45 minutes away.

Since Katrina struck, an estimated 70 nations, from Azerbaijan to Venezuela, have offered more than $100 million in cash donations to the American Red Cross, Rice says. Many countries have also donated supplies, ranging from helicopters to food, to help the victims. After outlining the influx of international support, Rice says she had told Bush, "If there's anything I can do outside of my responsibilities as Secretary of State, I'd be happy to do that too."

the international level--NOT beepopping about Alabama in an effort to make the administration look good--

9. Her responsibilities? As Secretary of State, she should
be working with all of the foreign countries which have offered help. Those are her job duties. She phrased her statement to get out of the embarrassment of being caught at a Broadway play and then shoe shopping while this humanitarian crisis was going on.
