Former first lady and mother to President Bush said Monday that evacuees from New Orleans have found a home in Houston.

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston," Barbara Bush told NPR.

"What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this --this is working very well for them."

Editor & Publisher notes the former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program.

I think she's the source of much of our country's present ills. Bush's father actually has some compassion, whereas I believe that a simple mutation created the Satanic Sethian we call the Cyclops Chimp.

is the only state taking in hurricane victims. I saw a map and probably at least 30 other states have taken people in. According to our local paper today LA actually has more shelters and people in them any other state. Naturally Texas would have more than others since it is close by and wasn't affected by the hurricane but no one mentions that many blue states have taken people in. So far my red state of Ohio hasn't made an offer, we would be willing to trade Taft for a few thousand.

I refuse to click on the Drudge link so I'm going by what you posted

(She's saying evacuees like Texas.)

(She's saying that many of the people now staying in the arena were poor so "this" -- relocating to Texas -- is working very well for them.)

If they can get jobs and live better than they did in NO, she's probably right that coming to Texas will turn out well for them.

I don't like the woman at all but I can't read her words any other way unless I just look at the last sentence, which could be construed to mean that "they're underprivileged so the arena is good enough for them." But in context with what she said before, I don't think that's what she meant.

She assumes that all those people are underprivileged. To Mrs. Bush life should consist of a healthy bank account and a life without financial concerns. Some people believe that the lives they had to leave was a terrible loss. Loss of precious possessions, friends, familial connections, and familiar surroundings. The truth is no matter what their lives were like at home, they have lost everything and will have to struggle to regain a life they might have enjoyed. You can bet that after it is all over the graciousness extended to them will be diminished and Texans will complain about the burden that has been foisted upon them.

She's shallow and has never suffered financially, never been separated from family and familiar surroundings that way so she doesn't think about all the things you mentioned. She thinks of it as a new start for them in a state she presumably likes very much. She doesn't want to focus on depressing things, just like she doesn't want to occupy her "beautiful mind" with thoughts of body bags. Denial is not just a river in Egypt, you know. It's a common defense mechanism for many people. If she didn't practice it a lot, she'd know how hated her sons and her husband are.

Since the evacuees are having to make a new start, I hope it will go well for them, whether in Texas or elsewhere, and I hope New Orleans can rise again and all those who want to return will be able to.

Also, not all who are talking about staying in Houston (or anywhere else outside New Orleans) are "underprivileged". Some of them drove here to stay in hotels, or are staying with family. And they are considering job opportunities elsewhere--some have jobs that could be transferred. And some companies might even desert the city; Houston is certainly in the hurricane belt but is not as vulnerable as New Orleans.
