...Like you, I was outraged by Barbara Bush's comments from the Astrodome as well -- what kind of country do we live in anyway?

Barbara Bush: Things Working Out 'Very Well' for Poor Evacuees from New Orleans

By E&P Staff

Published: September 05, 2005 7:25 PM ET updated 8:00 PM

NEW YORK Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, "This is working very well for them." The former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on American Public Media's "Marketplace" program. She was part of a group in Houston today at the Astrodome that included her husband and former President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son, the current president, to head fundraising efforts for the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama were also present.

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston." Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

The arrogance of the * family rears its ugly head once again. I'm nominating Barbara * as one of this week's "Conservative Idiots of the Week".

5. Pearls before swine - pearls ON swine. No difference here.
Keith Olbermann covered this. Flashed the quote, in a graphic, about how they were all underprivileged anyway and read it off-camera. Then the camera cuts back to him and the look on his face was priceless. All pinched - as though he just got a whiff of something that smelled REALLY foul. Frankly, he DID.

You can call young georgie-poo a son-of-a-bitch and be totally factually accurate.

2. In all fairness, that quote is taken out of context...
She actually said this:

What I’m hearing which is sort of
scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is
so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them.

Copied from above:

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to Houston." Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

What part is incpomplete?

Also, please cite source of your quote.

17. That is simply semantics and why would you care if a word here or
there was different but had the same meaning? Makes no sense. We all know what she said, how she said it, and wonder where she heard it? That, we don't know for sure, but one can imagine for
themselves where Dubya has gotten his hoof-in-mouth disease.

Isn't out of context in the least. Somehow because you're poor, this kind of catastrophe is going to work out well for you???

23. We all heard that quote in context many times,
no matter how you slice it, the meaning is still the same. "These people are used to very little and this is a step up for them and they are quite greatfull and should be". She is disgusting!!

Thanks for the tip, CNN's source is AP. Here it is:

Former President George Bush and his wife, Barbara, visit evacuees in Houston on Monday.

Barbara Bush: Relocation 'working very well' for poor

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Former Presidents Bush and Clinton got smiles, hugs and requests for autographs when they met with refugees from Hurricane Katrina -- but it was Bush's wife who got attention for some of her comments.

Barbara Bush, who accompanied the former presidents on a tour of the Astrodome complex Monday, said the relocation to Houston is "working very well" for some of the poor people forced out of New Orleans. "What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said during a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace." "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

14. I have a whole new theory about Babs "Beautiful Mind" Bush....
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 12:12 PM by Totally Committed
When hearing her speak... the heartlessness, the arrogance, and frankly, the stupidity of her opinions used to make me wonder why they kept putting a microphone in front of her at all. The lack of compassion and and the racism in your quote was not subtle, and for a political matriarch, very unsavvy. I just couldn't understand why they kept letting her talk.

Just now, as I re-read what she said about the "scary" part of this whole thing being that the great, unwashed, "underprivileged" might want to stay in Texas, it dawned on me. They are using her for a purpose. A specific purpose. She is meant to put George in perspective for us!

When you consider Barbara, you almost feel sorry for the Shrubber, growing up with an iceberg like her for a mother. SHE ILICITS SYMPATHY FOR SHRUBBER.

When you hear her speak, two things -- next to her, Shrubber sounds almost intelligent, and nowhere near as bigoted as she does. SHE MAKES HIM LOOK FAR BETTER THAN HE REALLY IS.

When she expresses her far-out views, Shrubber seems almost moderate in comparison, and when he goes too near her views, you figure -- the apple didn't fall far from the tree. SHE INFORMS US WHY HE IS THE WAY HE IS.

She is a foil for Shrubber. No doubt, Rove sees her as a secret weapon. But, when you come right down to it, his secret weapon is nothing more than a battle-axe in a pearl necklace. And she should be treated as such.

21. This is going to sound strange,
but I believe Barbara Bush was entirely sincere when she made this comment, "...you know, they were underprivileged anyway....".

What she is saying here, is that these folks are not really people as we know them. They more like sub-humans, like gerbils or maybe mice that live out in the woods.

She has ABSOLUTELY no concept of others, or people who live in a different social strata than herself. It's because they isolate themselves, they live and socialize and party only with people who are EXACTLY LIKE THEMSELVES. They all feel this way.

I know because I used to live in a very well-off community. All the ladies would get together in their little parties, and talk about "decorating, the colors of the season, and how much money their husband made, and where they were going on vacation next, and how well their little kids were doing in school, and on and on and on.

They live in this pathetic bubble. They shut out the rest of the world, and it becomes make-believe. They simply do not see the world as it is. They are unable to.

Barbara Bush should be pitied.

to me. And wealthy people don't discuss how much they make, it is really quite crass you know....I can think of many people I would pity, frankly, I don't like that word, but it wouldn't be Babs the Beast......who spawned the anti-christ and destroyed the country...

13. Michael Savage made that comment Friday evening on his
show out of San Francisco. Rush Limbaugh made a similar statement on his Friday show.

Savage's comment was: "This is a dream for a welfare state."

As a matter of fact, it was the last statement of his show on Friday. I just happened upon it at the end because online he comes on just before Mike Malloy, who kicks their asses every night. Anyway, also before Savage was off the air, some woman called in and called the victims "refugees." The right is really making an effort to call the victims of this hurricane and flood "refugees" because they know it riles people up and that is all they are about. These people in New Orleans are American Citizens. Why is that hard to remember . . . because they are poor? Hell with minimum wage the way it is now both the husband and wife can work full time but at minimum wage, and due to that being $400 a week gross, they would still be able to get assistance with food stamps, housing, Medicaid, etc. I'm sick of these "elite" trying to make it look like ALL of the people of NO are lazy and were just laying around on Welfare. I think that is unfair and cruel, and they are not refugees they are victims of a horror I hope I never have to go through or anyone else.

These people need help now not criticism.

25. In a couple of weeks, they will be dying to get rid of them,
I can't believe I heard today, they all turned down a luxury cruise ship to stay at the dome. Hell, you would get a private room and room service. I'm sure that will change soon....Babs will have them out there floating in water again.

I've already heard people complaining about having more crime. In other states they are talking about getting guns just in case.
