"We care very much, also, for what has happened to foreign nationals in this disaster," Rice told reporters in Washington as rescue efforts continued after the storm and floods that left thousands of people feared dead. More than a week after Katrina struck, several countries are still searching for missing citizens, including Australia.
Australia's Opposition Leader Kim Beazley has accused the Howard government of turning its back on Australians in need by not insisting its officials in the US be allowed in to the disaster zone to rescue them. Angry tourists and their families have also slammed the government's response to their plight, with the first Australian consular official allowed into New Orleans only on Monday.
Rice said:
"We are doing everything that we can to assist embassies around the world and governments around the world to help locate their citizens."
