Did Kieth Olbermann just say Countdown is going off the air?
Anyone catch the last few minutes of the show where he talked about the NBC president stepping down. Said Countdown was a shared concept, and thanked the outgoing president for his support.

Then he said he appreciated his viewers, but now he was going to "get out of our hair" or something like that. Was he talking about today or forever???

Say it ain't so!

:wow:

1. Countdown is staying
It's the creator who is moving on. Keith was thanking him.

As for getting out of our hair, I think he was just signing off.

I'm sure if there is more news on this, it will be posted within minutes.

7. The "get out of your hair" thing was related to the MCNBC prez
who is retiring. That's was Keith's way of saying that the referenced man didn't like personal comments like that -- that it was getting in the viewers' hair.

8. Yeah, and the actual quote was
"wasting the viewers' time."

He was trying to say Shapiro is a modest man who wouldn't have wanted Keith to "waste time" on the air thanking him.

10. Whoa - hope you're right, 'cause I about panicked when I heard him
say all that, especially after his rant last night (hope it got overwhelming support, but I was thinking: Maybe not!).

11. I thought the same thing when I saw his stop-smoking thing, "I Quit"
and supposedly, some producer or something was all fired up about that, saying he didn't care if KO came back to work or not, as I remember it....

I got the same feeling tonight, same as you.

I was wrong then, and hopefully we're both wrong now.

Guess we'll see...

12. I don't think there's any "see" about it.
Keith's done some slightly and even extremely off-the-wall things in the past at the end of his show. Unfortunately some of them have sent people into a needless panic...like the night he began his vacation early by walking off the set after scoring well on a News Quiz, and people panicked and thought he'd been fired for pushing too hard for an investigation into election fraud. He actually emailed people telling them no, he had NOT been fired.

Then there was the night he ended the show by describing how prophetic some movies had turned out to be, including "Network," with the things that had happened in TV news since that time...it had become all too much like the newscast depicted in the movie. Sure enough, when the camera cut back to Keith, he was wearing a trenchcoat and deliberately going into a Howard Beale-style rant...which was how he ended the show, only instead of telling people to open their windows and scream "I'm as mad as hell..." he told them to scream "Good night and good luck!" After which, he wandered aimlessly around the set a bit, dousing himself in the face with a cup of water before finally walking away.

It looked like this...

It was a Thursday, and he didn't show up Friday. But heck...he was just taking time off. It was just another classic moment of "Keith TV." By that measure, tonight's ending was tame.

Relax, folks...he was just trying to say thanks to the guy who came up with the concept for Countdown and had supported him along the way. While emphasizing that said man would not have wanted him to make a fuss.
