Governmentght, a friend stops by the house. A close friend of ours. We had CNN on and we got into a discussion. The thing is, this friend is one of those people who say, "I don't vote. I'm not political" or "I'm A-political" or "what difference does it make" (after 2000 & 2004 that one is hard to argue) or __________ fill in the blank for the tons of reasons why Americans cop out of doing there fair share to participate in the political system that was put in place for a reason. Politics affect your personal life, your community, and your society at large. This friend doesn't watch the news. Now in my generation (Gen X) that's not uncommon. I personally hate the news on a day to day basis because it is so negative and fear based. I no longer watch corporate news channels for news. I get my news from "Alternative" news sources. These days that means a variety of sources. It means I watch Amy Goodman on Democracy Now for my daily news, oh, and Jon Stewart's The Daily Show too. So, this friend has been living his little life for the past week (okay, I am obsessed with this disaster) but this idea that we Americans just keep going on with our own little lives like ants (I think the ants are more productive) is bothersome to me. This friend hasn’t seen much if any coverage of the disaster. This hits me as very callous. What do Americans need to wake up? Anyway, so this friend during the course of the brief conversation says “he doesn’t care about the President or what the President does.” I snapped, I mean inside. I don’t understand why people cannot see that a “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” doesn’t work without the PEOPLE. More than that, his comments seemed inhumane and insensitive. The conversation quickly escalated. I told him that what happened wasINEXCUSABLEE and INHUMANE. That the Federal Government failed. He was making excuses for the Federal Government. He is in disaster planning for a living. I have always wondered how he could sell out the environment (he doesn’t believe in global warming, says the planet naturally goes through phases). I really don’t know much about the work he does so I can’t get into that. What I told him was that his political apathy was repugnant to me. We ended up making some piece but the collision was clear as was my anger.
