Let's start the bidding on New Orleans real estate (whites only please)
You can be sure that the New Orleans Slumlords Association is already in contact with Bally's, Marriot, and Disney in order to get some ballpark figures of their future riches that they can jerk off to.

"The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the force of the Crown." Thus wrote William Pitt in 1760.

Now we'll get to see how the recent expansion of eminent domain powers expands to include all of New Orleans and most of the Gulf coast.

If there is any serious attempt by Congress (not likely) to challenge or moderate this ruling by the Supreme Court, Bush will have John Roberts and, probably, Alberto Gonzales on the court to make sure that his developer friends will inherit an even bigger gift than Halliburton has ever received. What a great way to start the donations for 2008 to start rolling in!

You can bet that Rove is already working on placing the evacuees in areas of the country that won't affect all the work that the republicans have already done on their jerrymandering.

It might be time for Louisiana to secede.

1. I am truly sick of these fucking posts
this is not productive.

If you want a class war you have already lost.

If you want to keep what you perceive as problems from happening then you're going to have to address the fact that it is business and corporate interests, and not RICH WHITE PEOPLE who are the threat.

And businesses and corporations take advantage of vacuums to generate profit - it's the reason they exist. It would be delusional to think that they won't try, but we have to be clear about addressing equity and the rights of individuals, not calling people "rich white guys" and throwing a hissy fit.

3. these fucking posts?
Who are you, Dick Cheney? I don't want a class war, but if you can't see one coming in the wake of the hurricane, you're delusional.

My post suggested that a city that is 67% black could fall into the hands of entertainment and hotel developers, who, you must admit, are pretty white corporations, by any way you want to measure them. If that's not recognizing that corporate interests are the problem, I don't know what is. I hope that you simply misunderstood my point.

Sure, there will still be private property, but only as a place to house the working class needed to carry the dollars from the tourists to the developers. I'm sure that such housing will only be built on the finest, most desirable properties.

5. you. said. dick cheney?
Your One Free Pass. Don't use it all in one place. Don't do it again.

I will attempt to shrug off that mortal offense. Shrugging, shrugging. Takes shower, disinfects.

I am not delusional. Exactly the opposite - perhaps I did misread but there have been a series of "blame the evil rich white guy posts" that are just stupid and I have completely lost my patience with it and I'm not pulling any punches any more. Stop, just stop.

I am sick and tired of the Predictions of Catastrophe by every political high priest, priestess, and street corner preacher here on DU. The entire nation is looking at this; it's not going to be a cover up and a sell off.

There are economic realities driving what gets rebuilt and how, and where, clearly. Thinking that there aren't would be delusional, I agree. There are other drivers too besides pure economics and if we want to be part of those drivers then we have to stop catastrophizing about something that hasn't happened yet and build a plan to keep it from happening. We are going to lose some turf - we can't avoid it. But if we expend our efforts dousing smoke, the fires will still be there, and we will be out of water.

We're not being sensible. Holy shit you equated me with Dick Cheney. I might still blow. I say that with grim humor. Please don't do that again.

6. sorry about the che*** thing
but you have to admit that there is going to be private land in New Orleans that could be used for a better public purpose than foundations marking where homes used to be. And now we have a ruling that it can be turned over to other private owners. You don't think the big entertainment industry doesn't want to land there?

7. Build a plan=GREAT idea! I'm hoping that the Dems in congress & elsewhere
are busy at work on that. Those plans MUST include provisions to preserve the housing of the poor of NO. Black or white.

2. I believe the word is gerrymandering.
The last time they seceded it didn't work out all that well for them.
