Karen Hughes first statement today - the looting makes us look
bad all over the world...the way she said it was like the problem was the "looting" the "crime." I mean, from what I read in papers around the world our poverty, our racism, our incompetence...those are the things that made us look bad. I have to find her actual comments. I think that they are here somewhere at DU.

Here's they deal. What's say we send a few messages to clarify things?

Contact, hmm, media, her, who? All of them? Any ideas?

words that are going to be used. He job is to speak to the base more so than the rest of the world.

2. Unbelievable...
She needs to read some of the blogs from around the world. Nobody is mentioning a thing about looting - just about a broken nation that doesn't take care of its people!

32. "Fat Karen" is just appealing to the GOP's racist base.
It's in the code words my freind. It has nothing to do with the outside world, just appeasing the right wing bigots, that all.

4. It's the looting, stupid. She and her pals continue to loot our treasury.
I wish someone with skill and access could morph and then catapult their looting fixation into perfect blowback on them.

7. Talk about "fingerpointing!!!"
Oh no, it's not the BushCo War on Iraq, it's not their complete incompetence, it's not their thumbing their nose at our allies and threatening everybody else, it's that a few people "looted" in the midst of a disaster. Yeah, sure, THAT's what makes the US look bad. :eyes:

10. I was there
I can tell you the truth about the looting and chaos. I am new here and I am a reg. Ind.
Tue. after the storm they sent out they needed volunteers with flatbottom boats to start getting people out of their homes because it had been two days and no water. I drove about 5 hours to the first staging area. This was approx. 10 miles from downtown. At 4 in the morning I talk to a truck driver there with a load of water and he had been there a day but couldn't get clearance to go in. At 530 we left that staging area and went right to the edge of NO.
There was at least 700 to 100 boats.
They started sending in the fisheries boats first and they where unarmed. Within a hour two had been flipped over and people where trying to get the boats so they had to start putting Department of Wildlife and Fisheries go with them because they were armed. They started getting shot at by rifles and had to turn back. At 930 they had sent 2/3s of the boats back because they couldn't provide security. We then made a convoy of about 100 boats with escort and went to three different locations to try to put in. Stopping multiple times to cut trees. By 2 or 3 they finally told us that they just couldn't use the civilian boats because they new they would have rescues to make there.
We had to drive back and leave those people trapped like that knowing that after two days in south La. in this time of year without water is dead.
We could have saved 2 to 3 thousand people in one trip when we had all the boats. The guys working their butts off in the choppers might get 3 or 4 hundred a week with what they had then.
Gov. Blanco didn't stop us from saving those people, the Mayor didn't make us leave those people and Bush didn't sit there with a battleship and not let us. It was people that where trying to get boats so they could get their stuff out of town and get to the places they couldn't get to.
After Wed or Thur. I dint see how anyone made it without water and I have seen no condemnation of the people that caused this because everyone is trying to make some kind of political angle to use against the other. So I saw the looting, it was everywhere. In the whole time I was driving through downtown I saw 1 and only one National guard truck with four or five unarmed troops in the back. What few were there where in the superdome. There was no way the NO police depart could keep up with it then and they had no where to take them if they did.

12. Was any of this captured on video
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 03:42 AM by DoYouEverWonder
I've read a couple of very similiar reports, almost like someone is using a template, but so far not one shred of concrete evidence has been presented. I'm not saying that this is not what you were told but from the sounds more like hearsay and that no one actually shot at you?

BTW: Welcome to DU.

Thanks for the welcome to DU. I shot four rolls of film on disposable cameras. I made four copies. But if someone with a scanner will email me at boilerskip@hotmail.com,and give me an address to send a copy of them to I will be glad to. They might find somewhere to post them so people could see them. I was at the convention center that morning it was empty. That night it filled up.

23. more on the film
One drawback of using this film is that I am in some of them, lol. But seriously our first staging area was where the choppers where bringing in and staging so some of em are pretty interesting.

24. shot at
I'm sorry i forgot to answer your question. Me and my friend that followed each other where about 80 boats from the front and the ones they launched they could only launch two at a time because of the ramps. But we did hear gunfire, especially when we got by the east side of New Orleans. I am not trying to be partisan. If it was up to me Sen. Breaux would have had to be in office for life. He was one of the best Sen. we have ever had. I just wanted to tell what I witnessed. Because the news usually gets slanted one way or the other. I really felt for the NOPD around canal street. they were ran ragged.

26. the looting
Out of all the looting we saw, at the most was 20% provisions. I saw cases of beer mainly. Then it was big boxes in shopping carts. Saks fifth avenue just got looted when we stopped there by the casino. But watching the news you would think it was all African-Americans looting. I saw plenty of white people looting too. I started taking pictures of the looters but I only went a block and shot 4 pictures and knew I would run out of film. The NOPD had no where to take them if they did arrest them and they were just trying to save people. I wasn't a big fan of the New Orleans PD because most of my experiences with them was when I used to go there and party. But after watching them I gained a mountain of respect for those that stayed and tried to help people. I never witnessed them heavy handing anyone either and with the stress that would be hard to control.

28. "looting" or survival
If they were helping themselves to food, water and necessaries, I'd be right with them in the same circumstances.

If they were grabbing TV sets and stereos, that may be something else.

Please be more clear!

34. I agree
There is nothing wrong with getting food and water. I didn't see anything wrong with them getting dry clothes either because we got into NO before day break and you could smell that backwater for a coupla miles before you got there. Anyone that has been through a flood in our swampy area knows how nasty that backwater is. Even things like sleeping bags or stuff like that is essential to live on when you have no options. Myself I didn't dwell on the looting and things but I really hated the people shooting at the boats.
Another thing that bothers me is when the racist title comes up because out of the volunteers 90 percent were white and we worked all day and drove all night tues to get there by wed morning and we knew the people needing us the most were black and when we had to leave it tore our guts out. There were some that had tears in their eyes. We knew how miserable it was for us just running around town and it killed us thinking how those people were suffering. It still bothers me.

15. I read it, thought about posting it on DU, and was too disgusted
I read her sanctimonious bullshit and started putting together a post and just couldn't do it. With everything going on right now, my own personal feeling (just mine, not looking for agreement or argument or anything in between) is to simply let the little lap dog yap, yap, yap...people are too damned busy right now to listen or give a damn.

Karen Hughes is inconsequential. She's a media flak. She's been elevated in the administration to keep Bush's wavering base "on topic." To hell with her.

17. it's fascinating - her new job is to "burnish" the American image
for the rest of the world...

and her first public statement fits right into the Bush Admin. spin on shifting the blame for Katrina - which is solely for domestic consumption.

Is there anything these crooks do that isn't self serving PR?

If you want to look for a bogey man go over to Houston and look around for Ken Lay. He's no doubt still residing in a big ass mansion.
