KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Al Gore helped airlift some 270 Katrina evacuees on two private charters from New Orleans, acting at the urging of a doctor who saved the life of the former vice president's son.

Gore criticized the Bush administration's slow response to Katrina in a speech Friday in San Francisco, but refused to be interviewed about the mercy missions he financed and flew on September 3 and 4.

However, Dr. Anderson Spickard, who is Gore's personal physician and accompanied him on the flights, said: "Gore told me he wanted to do this because like all of us he wanted to seize the opportunity to do what one guy can do, given the assets that he has."

An account of the flights was posted this week on a Democratic Party Web page. It was written by Greg Simon, president of the Washington-based activist group FasterCures. Simon, who helped put together the mission, also declined an interview.

"Help...people?"

Al Gore blasts Bush; personally airlifted Katrina victims

From The San Jose Mercury News
By TERENCE CHEA, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore urged Americans on Friday to hold the Bush administration accountable for failing to adequately prepare for and respond to Hurricane Katrina.

"When the corpses of American citizens are floating in toxic flood waters five days after a hurricane struck, it is time not only to respond directly to the victims of the catastrophe, but to hold ... the leaders of our nation accountable," Gore told environmentalists at the Sierra Club's national convention.

(snip)

"What happened was not only knowable, it was known in advance, in great and painstaking detail. They did tabletop planning exercises. They identified exactly what the scientific evidence showed would take place," Gore said.

Al Gore: Political Will Is a Renewable Resource

by John Byrne Barry

Former Vice President Al Gore quoted Winston Churchill, Upton Sinclair, the Bible, and President George W. Bush, and the contrast was not pretty.

Gore, who received multiple standing ovations from an audience of 2,000 at the opening morning of Sierra Summit 2005, made good use of quotes as well as references to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath to underscore his theme of moral responsibility in a time of crisis, specifically global warming. (He also got some well-deserved laughs along the way -- see "The Comedy of Al Gore.") (Read the AP story on Gore's speech.)

Gore went to the Churchill well the most. "We are entering a period of consequence," said Churchill as the the storm was gathering over Europe before World War II. Gore drew a parallel to the current situation regarding global warming. Just as was the case with Europe in the 1930s, "the warnings about global warming," he said, "have been extremely clear for a long time."

(snip)

But we have the vision and know-how and technology we need to address global warming, said Gore, but we lack the political will. "But political will is a renewable resource," he said, garnering one of the longest ovations of the morning.

(snip)

"There are those who say the problem is too big," he said. But then he rattled off a list of big problems that we've addressed, from freeing the slaves to sending a man to the moon to giving women the vote.

11. Of course he did. Let's tally them, shall we?
Himself, Karl Rove, his credibility, his "leadership," America's confidence, the last gasp of respect the US ever had, the myth that we aren't a racist and classist society, the faith we have in the government...
