WASHINGTON -- President Bush was in perhaps the deepest political trouble of his White House tenure: He had been excoriated for his response to a deadly tragedy; he was facing unified and aggressive Democrats; and he was watching gas prices reach record highs as his poll numbers sank to record lows.

In recent days, Bush has moved to control the damage: He pushed through more than $61 billion in aid, he asked for a day of prayer for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and he scheduled a new trip to the region, his third since the storm devastated the Gulf Coast.

And yesterday, he hauled Michael Brown, the federal official who became the public face of the government's response to the tragedy, back to Washington. Bush stopped short of sacking Brown, the Federal Emergency Management Agency director, as his critics have demanded, despite recent reports that Brown had embellished his resume. The man Bush nicknamed ''Brownie" will keep his job and is still charged with preparing the nation to respond to catastrophes.

But removing Brown from the front lines was part of a broader effort by the White House, which is desperately seeking to stop a political slide that may be threatening to much of the president's second-term agenda.

Lowering the integrity standard yet again, President Bush declared today that anybody executed for treason would no longer work in his administration. No, he didn't actually say that . . . but seriously now, how incompetent and inept does one have to be to lose his job as a crony of this president? Consider Michael Brown, whose criminal inaction turned a survivable hurricane into a category 5 catastrophe for the entire Gulf Coast. And now we learn that the ONLY previous emergency management experience on Brown's resume was faked! We all know that Bush is not interested in playing the indictment game, so isn't it time that we finally demand some accountability? Demand that Bush FIRE Michael Brown immediately.

The president did actually say that "Brownie," his pet name for the FEMA director, was doing "a heck of job" in the aftermath of the storm. Of course he also said that nobody could have anticipated that the levees would break. Although dire warnings from every quarter had predicted exactly that looming danger (see National Geographic, Oct. 2004, for example), Bush axed their repair and maintenance budgets. And he put in charge of the agency that would respond to a major terrorist attack a man with no experience and no credentials except as a frat boy bootlicker. Tell your members of Congress that Brown must go NOW, before the next disaster in the making cripples the rest of our economy.

5. I notice few articles are saying what the REAL meaning to republicans

is with regard to bush's falling numbers. It is not the 2nd term agenda, it is the 2006 elections and the possibility, or more likely the probability of a backlash to republican candidates. They are shitting bricks over that one, imo, so much so it is not to be mentioned.

They want him FIRED and off payroll. Bush's polls will continue on a downtrend until he steps up to the plate, admits his cronyism mistakes, apologizes sincerely to americans for his deadly neglect and loyalty to his friends. Even Bush's political capitol is in the red.
