FIFTY-SEVEN PERCENT OF AMERICANS HAVE LOST CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT TO DEAL WITH ANOTHER NATURAL DISASTER; 52% DO NOT TRUST PRESIDENT TO MAKE RIGHT DECISIONS IN A CRISIS

BUSH'S JOB APPROVAL AT RECORD LOW: 38 PERCENT

SIXTY-SIX PERCENT DISSATISFIED WITH DIRECTION OF COUNTRY SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT OF MINORITIES BELIEVE RACE WAS THE REASON FOR SLOW RESPONSE: 47 PERCENT SAY 'MAJOR REASON;'64 PERCENT OF WHITES SAY IT WAS NOT A REASON AT ALL

New York-President George W. Bush's approval ratings have fallen across the board in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and a seemingly flawed government response to the disaster, according to the latest Newsweek Poll. Bush's job-approval rating dropped to 38 percent, the lowest ever in the Newsweek Poll. Sixty-six percent of those polled say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time; just 28 percent are satisfied, another record low in the poll.

1. the descrepency between whites and blacks
is troubling to me, as it implies a lot more racism than I thought was in this country. The encouraging fact is that fewer and fewer people seem to believe or trust Bushco. I think his SS plan is dead. Now if we can only convice these same people that the rest of his plans for America (and Iraq) are a disaster as well.

2. Clearly a divider, not a uniter
But that has been apparent since * came on the scene.

Fitzgerald indictments within the white house could finally bring the house of cards down.

6. I think.......
what Fred Barnes said on Fox 2 days ago is telling...he said" it's not about the popularity it's about the power....he has power"....Nixon has a 39% approval but he had only 15 votes in the senate....how many are voting with Bush...that's the question.....we should be on the phones and we problably will have to MARCH too

8. Nixon had MUCH lower than 39% right before he resigned.
He got down into the low thirties and high twenties.

5. Add gas prices to that mix
Plus, in a few months we will be dealing with sky high heating bills. Maybe the idiot son will use this as another excuse for more tax cuts for the RICH who could care less what it costs to fill up their Hummers or heat their $7 Million homes.

9. Obama said race didn't drive the slow Katrina response, but
that incompetence was color blind.

I believe that obviously de facto the slow response had a disproportionate impact on blacks and poor people, white and black.

Intent or design doesn't always matter.

The fact that it was incompetence everywhere in the W administration, that it came from appointing incompetent people without emergency operations experience to FEMA, none of that changes who was impacted.

The fact that we know it would have been different if it had been a different large metropolitan area, because there would have been more power brought to bear to get things going, only shows again it wasn't intentional or designed.

It was like a default response, a lack of response that was allowed to continue for days due to a vacuum of caring and power and knowledge and experience.
