How do we hold Dennis Hastert accountable for wanting to bull-doze NOLA?
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 01:21 PM by Dr Fate
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/01/AR2005090101482.html

WASHINGTON -- It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.

"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," the Illinois Republican said in an interview about New Orleans Wednesday with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill.

Asked in the interview whether it made sense to spend billions rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he replied, "I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me."

And check this out- he basicaly says we should abandon San Francisco and Hollywood- two other cities beloved all over the world:

"We ought to take a second look at it. But you know we build Los Angeles and San Francisco on top of earthquake fissures and they rebuild too. Stubbornness."

Well- I've seen the photos of the French Quarter and I think the city can be saved. And writing off SF & LA???- no sir.

Hastert's assertion that we should let historical American cities fall have been largely forgotten in the media. But not too many Democrats are calling him on it either.

If you agree- let Democrats & the media know that you think Hastert should be held accountable and made to apologize. CNN has been pretty okay lately-try them.

Now is a good time to revisit his recent proclamation to raze cities, with the photos of the beloved French Quarter showing that Hastert is out of his mind.

3. They Are Scattered Among A Dozen Deep-Red States
They won't have enough votes to matter in any of them.

6. They aren't all deep red. Some are more purple
with dalliances into blue.

Every vote might help.

2. Remember it and save the article and quotation, and be
ready to bring it out next time he runs for office or tries to weigh in on anything major.

Hold on to it and wait for the right moment to use it.

Another way, in addition to getting Katrina survivors registered to vote. (good idea)

4. As long as he remains in Congress he won't be hurt.
His midwest constituents don't care too much about N.O. They have their own concerns.

10. We could pressure our own Congressmen to demote his position.

I'd like to see more DEMs asking congressmen if they agree with their speaker on this.

5. Hastert is the only honest republican
Republicans have done everything they can to cut off funds for cities, and redirect them into tax cuts for corporations/people located in sprawling suburbs.

Republicans have no use for cities....and especially have no use for the people who live there. To them, the future lies in the suburbs.

7. One of the more interesting aspects of this statement.
It was made while he was back in his district touring the drought damaged farms with the Sec. of Ag., setting in motion disaster relief for the farmers that had were about to suffer economically from another climate related disaster. The Farm Bureau head pointed out that new loans did not really do much but keep farmers who are already in debt treading water for one more year.

11. "Stubbornness..."--or pluck? We simply need to throw his boneheaded
thinking back at him. Make him defend the indefensible.
