$$$ How much has Halliburton donated to Katrina relief funds??$$$
Edited on Sat Sep-10-05 03:35 PM by omega minimo
As we are encouraged by the President and Vice-President to help fellow citizens and donate our hard-earned money; as other corporations step up and donate; as Halliburton and other Bushco. crony companies feast on the carrion contracts in the OTHER Gulf Coast; as disgraced FEMA head Mike Brown's former boss lobbies for Halliburton in NO (www.therandirhodesshow.com)...

how much corporate largesse has been demonstrated by HALLIBURTON?

:bounce: :evilfrown: :bounce:

5. Edwards has a great proposal to have NO evacuees get the funds to rebuild
in a program like the Civilian Conservation Corps or WPA. Read about it here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2077511

It makes sense that the people affected should be the ones to rebuild. After all, they need the jobs now, and one could make the argument to the far-right folks that it makes far more sense even from an economic perspective to give them the jobs to rebuild rather than BOTH pay unemployment AND Halliburton!

7. OMG WPA!!!!! FDR!!!!!!! AAAAAAaaaaaaahhhhhhhgggh
The Rong Wing will be flippin out at that idea-- after all the effort they have gone to to DISAPPEAR the legacy, and even the memory, of Roosevelt.

They almost had their Reagan dime!

8. Let em flip out all they want: better than giving the $ to Halliburton
and I think if that was stressed, that the American people might understand that. That's the reframing that could be done: who should get the money? Haliburton, or the people who actually suffered in this tragedy?

10. Any chance of getting people to understand that
the same company that destroyed Iraq from the WH has the contracts to rebuild it?

and the same company that let Katrina destroy NO from the WH has the contracts to rebuild it?

If you are talking about a new WPA-- and that's a great idea-- it would be even more successful if people understood the history, if FDR was not "disappeared," and if "framing" was called "telling the truth."

14. Check the Edwards link and the One America website...it's impressive.
And I don't know if it would even be critical to tell people about the FDR part...I mention it here only because I think people here would understand more quickly the nature of Edwards' proposal.

I think the idea of paying the people of NO to rebuild their city, rather than paying Haliburton to do it would resonate.

17. I don't quite get what you mean by that comment. Yeah, it's obvious that
those in NO are aware of all they've lost (is that what you meant?), but the proposal of Edwards would be a way that they could regain a sense of control over their lives...a sort of "de-trampling," if you will. A way of coming back...

...and it would not give more money to Haliburton (a trampler if there ever was one).

18. My karma ran over your dogma
:hi:

I think it's a GREAT IDEA. I will check out Edwards on this, thank you.

Meanwhile, I am not a fan of "framing." The raw emotions and ongoing suffering of the people of the Gulf Coast has me bristling at the notion of the need for "re-framing" or "resonating." We have all had our faces rubbed in the reality perpetrated on these people, the reality of who perpetrated it, the reality of who runs this country (into the ground), the reality of poverty and racism in this country......

And even when it's right in our faces, when events and facts and images "tell it like it is," a LARGE segment of the population remains completely clueless, self-righteously in denial and/or comfortably numb.

Reality ought to be enough and it ain't. People are so heavily addicted to marketing techniques that maybe Lakoff's fight-fire-with-fire theories will be effective. Some of us hold-outs prefer truth on its own terms, rather than truth convoluted and conscripted for salesmanship.

IMHO MARKETING IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION.

:smoke:  :patriot:

Thanks again for bringing up Edward's proposal. It is a brilliant concept. It would serve the people who have needlessly suffered and may help show people how and why we do need a social safety net (which was FDR's legacy).

19. When dealing with the * admin, to reframe IS to tell the truth!
I think the framing thing has to do with WHOSE truth gets told.

But I know what you mean, too. I have been so impressed by all the people who seem to be speaking from their hearts in response to this crisis...thinking strategically seems a little crass at a time like this.

The problem is, all that heartfelt compassion has been in danger of being re-framed by the other side ("blame-game, finger-pointing" sort of comments, when ever the conversation got to the next step of trying to analyze what went wrong, not to mention the early focus on "looting" by hungry frightened people), so I guess that strategizing is unavoidable. Everything (just about), when you get down to it, is political.

20. I hear ya, Wordie. Thanks for not jumping on my admission
It's the first time on DU that I have made such comments and not been ATTACKED by 'framing" fans that insult, but don't provide convincing reasoning--

I just read the Lakoff thread bouncing around GDP. I respect those who relate to this approach. I don't. And as I said, the opportunities to discuss it on DU have degenerated into hostility from folks who seem to have drunk HIS Kool-Aid (without being able to communicate about it except to the faithful!)

On that thread, someone talks about "Joe Six Pack" as if JSP is not here at DU right now. I know s/he is-- and when those voices speak up and post, they are often MORE eloquent, observant and honest that many of the supposedly educated, smart and snarky posters that they feel intimidated by.

Framing is a sheet of plexiglas set up b/w the "framer" and the "framee." There is an unavoidable separation and ("frame" folks hate this) elitism implicit in the attitude. It's not intentional, but the approach of assuming you have to craft language for some imagined "Other" is-- exclusive. IMHO.

Lakoff talks about empathy. Empathy and responsiblity. Amazing. And he's right.

There is something about the whole notion and approach that is unfortunately condescending (including the attitude of DUers who condescend without providing any insight about "framing"). Even Lakoff's writing style seems a bit (and I apologize ahead of time for saying this) as if HE condescends to HIS audience.

Is public life and discourse reduced to bumperstickers and flashcards? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

It seems if "framing" is valid and non-elitist, then we would be able to discuss it-- not just a matter of "read the book and swallow it whole or you're not One of Us." That impression is NOT a positive endorsement of Lakoff's system.

One more thing-- White America has proved its shocking and enduring cluelessness in the face of BLATANT HOMOCIDAL RACISM (how's that for framing?) (Didn't notice that in Lakoff's article-- he wants to talk about political/policy failure).

Blatant. Homocidal. Racism. And white Americans reached into their pocketbooks and out with their hearts, but still-- something is missing. The REAL BLINDING OUTRAGE IS ABSENT. The FACT that these were black faces, black babies, black elders, and IT WAS NOT A COINCIDENCE.

That it the most damaging and dangerous framing that Bushco. cooked up. And America bought it.

:smoke:

Americans who get this don't need no "framing." And I'll bet a whole hell of a lot of "Joe Sixpacks" get it more clearly than a lot of higher-on-the-ladder Americans.

6. GWB donated 10 K of personal funds to tsunami
I've been trying (halfheartedly) to determine how much he donated from his personal acct to Karinna, Karnna

Anyone got a source on that?

I know there was a brief MSM ref to the fact that he'd made a donation, but no one said how much.

Anyway to find that out?

9. Maybe gave 5 Million and then added 6 million to the LA Naval contract..
Seeing how they get to do the damn job without the hint of a bid process they could easily kick in a few million more....

21. from Halliburton web site...........
-- Halliburton has established an online giving program for employees around the world to support the victims and families of those affected by the horrific events of late August. During its online giving program for this disaster, the Company will match, dollar-for-dollar, every employee contribution that is received. Through a secure Web site, employees may make donations with a credit card and may choose up to six charities assisting with relief efforts. Charities available through the company's online giving campaign include: American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, America's Second Harvest, Catholic Charities Association, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society or the Salvation Army.
