Brown sent candid e-mail to family

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DENVER -- Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown sent a candid e-mail to family and friends this week as he was becoming the center of criticism of the handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

"I don't mind the negative press (well, actually, I do, but I try to ignore it) but it is really wearing out the family," Brown wrote. "No wonder people don't go into public service. This country is devouring itself, the 24-hour news cycle is numbing our ability to think for ourselves," the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday.

Brown was relieved of his command of the onsite relief efforts Friday amid increasing criticism over the sluggishness of the agency's response and questions over his background.

"It's horrible," said Mary Ann Karns, an Oklahoma lawyer who once worked with Brown in the Edmond, Okla., city government and got the e-mail addressed. "He does not deserve this as a human being."

1. I think Brownie's ability
to think for himself was "numbed" a long time ago.

15. He and other Bush cronies are NOT "in Public service" they are appointees

political appontees. They are not Federal public servants. In fact, a huge portion of the Federal government service is CONTRACTED OUT and believe me it's for huge profits...not service.

6. He's having a "pity party"...
Last night it was a fine Mexican meal with a good stiff Margarita, today it's self-pity.

He's working his way through the seven stages, apparently.

4. after the way the Republicans savaged
not only Clinton but other Democratic politicians, and not only them, but their families and friends, I can't muster even an ounce of sympathy for any Republican who finds himself the victim of, not an orchestrated witch hunt by Democrats, but of his own fucking incompetence.

8. I was in public service for 30 years
This guy is a fraud. What a damned sociopath to boot. Now *he's* the wounded puppy? Give me a break.

These socipath types never get the clue and recognize the message. They fuck up, get called on it and then hit the denial button - "What's up? Moi? Huh?". They're hopeless. He needs to get kicked to the curb.

11. And yet, he still has his job...
...I wonder what it will take for Junior to cut him loose. He's at 38% approval...maybe another point or two and Brown will "decide to spend more time with his family."

:grr:

12. Oh, hon - this was still a huge concession by Bush
I agree with you that Brown should be so gone. But it must have absolutely killed Bush to remove him from the Katrina event. It still represents an admission of his mistake, of things that went wrong etc. His jaw must have jerked itself into the next room over this one. If I was the family dog, I'd be hiding out. Drunks like Bush are mean.

14. You're right...
I don't know how much of the recent "Out-of-control Bush frightens White House Interns" stuff was true (many DUers believe that Capitol Hill Blue is largely a work of fiction, but I remember his "Furious George" moment during the Charlie Gibson-moderated Kerry debate.

I imagine he dragged Chertoff into a room, let loose with a few four and ten letter words, and the rest is history.

This photo, taken at the time that Frist publicly opposed Bush on stem cell research, is one of the most frightening he's taken. Frist looks defeated, Bush looks like he's savoring every moment of it:

13. Guvmit Bureaucrats...
After the Reagan/Bush I/Bush II administrations, plus the Repug Congress, have said that "guvmint bureaucrats" are all part of the problem, and we're sucking the lifeblood out of the country, yadda yadda yadda, people are soured on public service in general. Many Federal agencies are desperate for new people because their workforce is aging and retiring. Take a look at NASA, for example.

The Repugs have made public service out to be a crime, not a rewarding career.
