Kerry bashes Bush at Corzine rally
Sunday, September 11, 2005
BY JEFF WHELAN
Star-Ledger Staff

Saying it bordered on “criminal negligence,” U.S. Sen. John Kerry blasted the Bush administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina yesterday and urged New Jersey voters to express their own dissatisfaction by electing Democrat Jon Corzine governor.

Kerry made his remarks during a boisterous campaign rally for Corzine at a union hall in Paramus, part of a seven-stop tour of the state by the former presidential nominee to boost Democrats in the November elections.

The Massachusetts senator, who outpolled Bush by 7 percentage points in New Jersey in his failed 2004 presidential campaign, said a Corzine victory would be a rejection of Bush’s handling of issues ranging from Katrina to the war in Iraq. He said the federal response to the hurricane would have been “profoundly” better under him.

“Make them hear what America needs to hear,” Kerry said to loud applause from hundreds of union workers as Corzine stood by his side.

“This is not just a race for New Jersey. People all across the country are going to read the tea leaves. People all across the country are going to listen to your voices as you express them when you go to the polls,” he said. “This is a time for our country to touch its soul again, and you can do that at the ballot box.”

If that is the silver lining in the horrible, cloud that is/was Katrina, I'll take it. I just wish it didn't take so much devastation and destruction to come about...

19. To me, that is the key point
Kerry has spoken out many times about many issues, but it is ignored by the corporate media. Was this particular speech covered on cable news? I am curious about why you say the media is starting to cover him. Since I boycott the corporate media, I have to rely on y'all to let me know what they're up to.;-)

11. When Kerry calls Bush and his cronies liars, let me know.
I'm happy he said the response by the administration to the storm bordered on criminal negligence, but at this point, that's just more sidestepping and pussyfooting around the real issue....which is that Bush is a criminal and a liar. THAT'S what Kerry should say.

nor will they be swayed by Democratic name calling. Kerry points out the ACTIONS - that jusify the words. If he used the words, the story would be Just Kerry called Bush a .... The context would get lostin the noise.

12. Remember ......................
GW has 3 more years and that means even more chances of him blundering something else that comes our way. Also remember Lying, cheating, and stealing are not impeachable offenses, just so long as GW doesn't get caught with his cigar in someone other then his wife, that is an impeachable offense.

"where is John Kerry?" So he's screwed no matter what. Everyday I pray that the people who lead our party aren't reading tripe like this.

Serious question though: Where's the beef? Your post adds nothing. It's just a jab at Kerry. If you don't like him fine. But don't play games like "you're going to have to do a whole lot more to get me back onto your team." Saying that his speech was opportunistic is speculation, and the fact that you assumed it was opportunistic suggests you don't really like Kerry very much. Chances are you will never be on Kerry's team again, because you don't want to be. This has nothing to do with Kerry, it has to do with you.

23. Exactly!!
Make up your freakin mind! It's the same thing with Clinton (both), Obama etc. When they finally do speak up it doesn't matter and you say it isn't enough etc. Oh brother! How pathetic! Just because they don't directly say they're a liar in the words you'd like that means what they say doesn't matter. Yes, it does. Sorry Kerry has to dumb things down for ya.

30. I saw him
What was he doing?:

- Trying to get more active volunteers for NJ Democrats

- Supporting the Candidates

- Articulating a message that part of citizenship is holding government accountable and helping people see they can be the grassroots they complain don't exist.

-This was a crowd that came out to hear Kerry. There was not one word about 2008. The needs are now.

How is it opportunism for a very busy Senator to spend a full day going non-stop to 5 NJ locations? (I live in NJ, even the thought of driving (Paramus - Wayne - Morristown - Edison - Princeton) sounds like work, talking to 5 groups seems like a pretty major committment.)

Sounds to me that he is concerned about the health of the Democratic party and the state of our country - and doing everything in his power to help. Which Senator is doing more?

17. Why bashes? Did he say anything that is false?
Once again the media are supporting Bush by implying that everyone who criticizes him is going overboard.

They do that with Dean, with Reid, with Boxer.

We have to stand with Democrats when they say the truth.

27. Hopefully, this kind of linkage will work.
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 02:41 PM by Clarkie1
If we can link in voters minds dissatisfaction with Bush to dissatisfaction with Republicans at all levels of government, that should definitely help in 06'. It's one part of a wider strategy, but we can't really rely on winning governerships based on Bush's performance at the federal level.

I am reminded of the phrase "all politics is local," so I'm not sure this kind of action will go beyond energizing a base that always votes Democratic anyway. We really need to define ourselves better as a party at all levels, our core values and beliefs, and do a much better job of contrasting that with the failed political philosophy of the neo-con Republican Party. That requires new leadership that unites us as a country and looks forward to the future, not so much the tired game of "red vs. blue" or "Republicans vs. Democrats." We need to move the debate beyond which party is better to what approach is better.

There are no red or blue states.

31. Part of the problem is that the article did not cover
much of Kerry's comments. I went to Morristown, one of the other locations. Kerry's linkage works in ths case because of the values that Forrester espouses. Kerry was talking very directly about core values - and doing it quite well.

Kerry was calling for accountability, not bashing Bush.
