Mike Brown is an American hero. In years to come, he will be lauded as a true American, an embodiment of the American spirit, a true patriot.
Sure, as director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, he’s presided over one of the biggest screw-ups in American history and could probably be held directly responsible for the deaths of untold hundreds, maybe thousands, of people, but he is a real hero to many of us.
True, he exhibited cluelessness of epic proportions. OK, he didn’t even respond when Hurricane Katrina began beating New Orleans like Ike Turner on a bender. And even after he did respond, his initial response, to have some federal employees go to New Orleans and put on a dog and pony show for the locals, could be characterized as kind of inadequate.

What does it take to get fired from FEMA? Remember this?
And a lot of people were blaming him for screwing up and calling for his head and wondering just what somebody had to do to get fired from FEMA. Here’s part of the answer: A FEMA employee in West Virginia last year attended Bush’s Fourth of July speech wearing an anti-Bush T-shirt. She was arrested and taken away so she missed Bush speaking about our freedoms and such. And then, FEMA informed her she was canned.
The best part of the story is when FEMA contacted health officials in Charleston, South Carolina and told them they had 30 minutes to prepare for an influx of 180 evacuees needing emergency care. The officials responded and were ready and waiting. And waiting. And waiting.
Then they found out the evacuees had been sent to Charleston, West Virginia.
Oops.
