Party of Profanity........*S*
This is a light-hearted post...I hope it's not inappropriate for this forum.

I don't have the stomach to frequent RW messageboards, but I know we (the liberals) are accused of being foul-mouthed. I don't know if they swear much in their rants.

Granted, we are often foul-mouthed and I, for one, THOROUGHLY enjoy profanity as a means of expression. It's usually lighthearted, not out of anger (though it's a given * does bring that out in us), but I feel a well-placed "fuck" and so on works WONDERS for my mood.....:bounce:

Now, I'm polite enough to refrain when others are offended by profanity....no problem....and certainly refrain when children are around (well, most of the time....lol) But I'm not using anyone's god in vain or anything like that, and I dare say that those of us in their 30's and 40's are fairly well-educated and well-read, yet profanity is part of social banter (when with like-minded individuals, that is).

So, what's the problem? Does anyone feel this is something that does the "liberal" agenda a disservice, or should we celebrate our colorful means of expression and be the Party of Profanity?!!!

:toast:

1. There's profanity and there's profanity
If someone needs to us the "f" word in a time of stress, I say let them use it. It is just a word.

Far more profane are the actions of Bushco that led to the deaths of many many people in the Gulf Coast regions and thousands of Iraqis and nearly 2000 US military personnel.

Now I regularly scream all kinds of obscenities at my car radio as I drive home listening to the news.

5. Well, contrast Dick Cheney to Gore for some insight.
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 05:07 PM by FrozeUp
Here's Cheney saying "go fuck yourself" on the floor of the House while republicans don't swear on their forums, here's us swearing in a casual online forum, while Gore never did anything like Cheney in a respected government building when he was VP. Which one of these two ways of handling profanity seems ass backwards to you? :)

7. I'll try harder not to swear. But if Bush stands down his aid & troops
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 06:10 PM by applegrove
while a whole other American City descends into highly predictable kaos - and then lets the Pentagon come out with a pity play where they make "themselves the victims" on Day Three of the flood - while people are dying of dehydration in places some Bush appointment knows nothing about - all so that a vacuum can be created and private corporations roll in to save the day (which they didn't get to do this time because Bush had to respond with government deployment in the end because of all the Swearing and Screaming) - all bets are off.

I will scream again when Bush comes out with another neocon experiment in making governance look bad - at the cost of lives. If they play another crisis like I slow sonata - I yelling & swearing.

11. But F@@@ is such a versatile word, as demonstrated here:
"Perhaps one of the most interesting and colorful words in the English language today is the word "fuck". It is the one magical word which, just by its sound, can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate.

In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John). It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck), a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck), an adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John), or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck)..."

12. Whoever wrote that doesn't know grammar
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 07:11 PM by alcibiades_mystery
In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John)these are active and passive voice, respectively, not transitive and intransitive (both are transitive). It can be an action verb (John really gives a fuck)fuck is used here as a noun, not an "action verb;" "to give a fuck," however, could be considered a "verb phrase" like "to pick one's nose," but there is no distinction between "John really gives a fuck" and "Mary doesn't give a fuck" in terms of active and passive voice; besides, the writer doesn't even seem to distinguish between an "action verb" and the "active voice," a grave error mof terminology, since an action verb can take both the active and passive voice, and there is no such thing as a "passive verb" although most verbs can take the passive voice, a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck)wrong, see previous comment (in fact, it would seem that if we are to consider "to give a fuck" as a verb phrase, that it is intransitive, and cannot take the passive voice without difficulty; you'd need some kind of prepositional phrase "John doesn't give a fuck about Mary" as the active voice construction, and something bizarre for the passive voice like "Mary is not given a fuck about by John," a crude construction to say the least, an adverb (Mary is fucking interested in John), or as a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck)...

-----

In any case, the writer fails to mention that "fuck" can also function as a subject complement, as in "John is well and truly fucked."

17. I think profanity is overused here, especially in subject lines....
And, yeah, I think some visitors to the site, who might consider joining us, and maybe some press or some politicos, might dismiss us as immature and less than serious about our purpose (which would not be a fair judgment about most of us), and move on.
