The Turning Point: when did public opinion turn on Chimpy?
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 05:44 PM by npincus
Clearly something big is going on here; the sheeple have FINALLY woken to the incompetence of their once-trusted leader and his cronies. Security was his one strong point to them; now the emperor has no clothes and has been exposed as the fraud he is, ironically by the same media that propped him up and served as the echo chamber for the tragic lies that got us into Iraq and caused so much death and misery- not to mention bankrupting our Treasury.

Well, what event (if any) in your opinion, caused this mass-epiphany that he is an incompetent jackass and we all have been deceived?

In my opinion, it happened BEFORE Katrina.

I think the July terrorist atttack in Great Britain was The Moment: people who had mindlessly supported the Monkey started to use their grey matter, and realized that the Iraq Democracy Experiemnt had in fact, made the world LESS safe, and the goods that we were sold were potentially-lethal GARBAGE. It made the public re-think their commitment to "the Iraq mission" and question what the Fuck WAS the mission, anyway?

His response to Katrina only confirmed their suspicions; that he was not up to the job and his priorities were not protecting us, but he had something else in mind- or nothing at all. And that is why Chimpy is dropping in the polls like a concrete anchor.

Enjoy the ride down, you bastards!

29. March 19th--
I was in the hospital during the height of it.

I remember watching it on TV in my room, terrified in case anything happened to me on the operating table.

9. Damn...you beat me to it. That's exactly my thoughts too
From there it's been a simmer with the Iraq quagmire, gas prices and now the bungled Federal response in New Orleans.

That really reveals that #1: We are NO SAFER, #2: Republicans believe in intrusion into everyone's personal matters, and #3: Republican cronies in the oil/gas industry will take full advantage of you with the blessings of this administration.

3. You know how before a live tv show
somebody warms up the audience? I see Camp Casey as a big warm up that made a lot of people look up and around them..and what did they see? Katrina.

8. My thoughts exactly.
Camp Casey was the 'kinda makes you go hmmmm' moment. Then Katrina sealed the deal.

the rise in the price of gas.

That was not supposed to be a consequence of attacking Iraq.

5. I don't think there has been a "turning point."
The polls seems to suggest a slow steady slide downward.

And, unfortunately, I don't think it's irreversible. Quite a few of his former supporters may just be ticked about the gas prices, since they're only concerned with what affects them personally, right now. They'll get back on board his train as soon as they feel better off.

15. Polls did show a steady slide from 9/11
But I do think it's irreversible. The number of turning points listed in this thread, although not turning points, are contributing to the willingness to disapprove.

I think that the huge approval after 9/11 was based on the belief that a commander could keep us safe and any lessening of his power might make us less safe. So the country gave him largely unquestioned backing. How did it work? Shittily. So the next terror attack, who is going to say that the best solution is to once again make Bush our CinC?

26. this is why 9/11 doesn't work anymore
we all know that Bush uses 9/11 and the threat of terrorism every time his poll numbers start to take a dive!

But I don't think that's going to work anymore! The only reason why it's worked in the past is because people believed that he (or his administration) would protect them. After the miserable failure of Katrina........we now know that's not true.

So he can invoke 9/11 and terrorism all he wants....it's not going to help him now!

6. Actually most of the dumbass sheeple in this country are really pissed
Edited on Sun Sep-11-05 05:49 PM by BrklynLiberal
that gas prices are so high! THAT is the one thing that I have heard the most complaints about among the Bush voters that I have had the unfortunate luck to have to come in contact with.
THAT is the ONLY thing that they can find to be pissed off about!! So until it affects THEIR pocketbook, in a simpllistic way that they can see everyday, they really could not care less about anything or anyone else.

11. I agree with ThoughtCriminal.
The tables started turning after the Schiavo debacle. The hits just kept on coming. Ongoing massive loss of life in Iraq, Plamegate getting attention, Downing Street minutes, CINDY SHEEHAN, gas prices off the charts....then finally Katrina.

did I leave anything out?

12. I think it has been building to a perfect storm
Any one of the above mentioned issues by themselves were not enough, but the combination of Cindy, Katrina, the outraged reporters screaming about the conditions in NO, AND THE MASSIVE JUMP IN GAS PRICES, which was clearly PROFIT TAKING, pulled the house of cards down. It was just too much sucky leadership too close together...

At that point, people woke from their bullshit lockstep slumber, started thinking critically, and they are asking themselves, are we better off than we were five years ago? There is only one answer--FUCK NO...and three hundred dollar tax cuts are not enough to keep folks happy, especially when that won't fill the obscenely large vehicle they are driving for even a month, if they rack up heavy mileage.

I'm wondering how many GOP types would blow Clinton themselves to have that ole peace and prosperity back again????

a piling up of everything over the past 5 years? As so many of us have said before, name ONE good thing Bush has done? Maybe the majority of Americans are now asking themselves that same question?

19. I think it was his 5 week vacation
and then refusing to leave his ranch even after one of our most important cities lay in devastation.

I think that looked just plain stupid to a lot of Americans, even those who supported him before that.

21. slow erosion
starting with the lack of support for Guard Troops (remember these folks live in the little towns, many in the South, where Bush had a lot of support). The Schaivo thing was spun by some, but a lot looked at the situation and wondered if they wanted THEIR relative treated that way. The next thing was the fact that many many states had to raise taxes or create new taxes (like they did in Arkansas) to make up for shortfalls. The surge in gasoline prices, which had started before Katrina, was the final straw for many, my boss included.

22. it started with Schiavo
Recently I was looking at a graph having to do with his poll numbers and his numbers took a dive in March! They never have recovered since then and after Katrina, I doubt that they ever will.

I know the Republicans thought they were doing the right thing with Schiavo. What they forgot is that Americans don't want them meddling in their personal lives!!

They would have to do an awful lot to recover from the damage Katrina has done to them!!

25. I think gas prices have sent people over the edge
Iraq and Katrina didn't happen to everyone and the terrorist attacks in London are far awy from the American mainstream, but gasoline prices affect each and every one of us.
