31. Helen Thomas said recently that 9/11 in effect put everybody to sleep

in the press corps. As a former reporter, I certainly agree. It was as though they all got a free trip to the dentist's office where they were given lots of great drugs and then had every last one of their teeth extracted. But they were kept on the drugs after that just to make sure they remained fat, happy, and docile as hell.

When I was in the news business, we thought we were supposed to be watch dogs. NOT lapdogs.

GOOD if journalists are more surprised than we are about what America is really thinking. Maybe they'll finally wake up, too, and realize they haven't seen this coming because they had their heads too far up their asses and couldn't see squat. May this be a wakeup call to all of them. About time they started working for a living and doing the jobs they're supposed to do if they're really to call themselves respectable journalists. They're JOURNALISTS. NOT PR people for the White House.

"Passion?" "Anger?" "Crossovers?" "Long lines?" "Record turnouts?" And wasn't it supposed to be horrendously cold and snowy there - an assumed discouragement factor in getting the vote out? If so (I'm a Southern Californian. Whaddo I know about snow?) that means that there's some serious depth of feeling out there among Dems. If so, that is a MOST beautiful thing. MOST beautiful!
