Al Gore in perfect position to run in 2008?
Does anyone else think that Al Gore is in perfect position to run for re-election in 2008?

I think in a way not running in 2004 was a brilliant move. It has allowed Al Gore the perfect opportunity to contrast himself to what Bush had done to the US. Also, he can now be the anti-Hillary.

Let's be honest here folks - not many of us think HRC can win and that she is doing a lot of this out of self-Clintonized interest.

So I think our perfect candidate is Al Gore. He has built a sincere bridge to the minority community and has been freed from the binds of "losing" once before. In other words, he would not be fearful of not being selected as POTUS and would run a much better campaign.

1. He might be, but we should focus on 2006
otherwise Gore and/or anyone won't have a chance in 08. Fix the voting machines first.

Hillary is not electable. The world would be a better place if Gore had won.

I think his chances are very good. Do you think he will run /

has he shown the slightest clue that he will?

5. All I've heard is rumors
Check out the Al Gore 2008 forum for some of them. I remember earlier this year Tipper made a hint he was going to run for something. I would love it if Gore ran again. While I like Hillary as a person and everything I don't think she should run in 2008 because we need someone very progressive to clean up Bush's messes and that person is Gore. If we can't have Kerry/Edwards I would love to have Gore.

gore was asked if he was running for president in '08. he laughed and said, "if i was running for president in '08, do you think i'd be saying the things i'm saying?"

gore/clark. i like the ring of that as much as, say, clark/Sabenius
clark and susan collins... oooh, a cross party ticket...

11. best as i can tell
he's been kicking ass and taking no prisoners. he's feeling populist and liberated, and even tho he knows the election was stolen, i think he knows he could've run a better race.

personally, and even tho the man is my senator, i think kerry should sit the next one out, and get named sec'y of defense in the next democratic admin.

i think hillary should not run- she's wrong on the dlc, wrong on iraq, and although i have great respect for her, i haven't figured out whether she brings enough to a ticket to win. who would her VP be?

i really like clark. he'd make a great president, a terrific anti-cheney engaged vp, or the best sec'y of state we've had since WWII.

and gore? well, if he ran as a populist, which i believe he is at heart, i'd loved to see that. the universe is prepping for a major correction, and he's owed bigtime.

12. I would love to see Gore run
I think he would do a lot better this time around. He's very anti-war which helps him a lot and has spoken out against Iraq a lot and since the beginning. He's never flipped on the issue or anything like that. He's very pro-enivornment and I think everybody knows that about him. He's a lot stronger politician now publicially then he was in 2000. I think he will do great in debates now since he's been doing public speaking since he's been out of office and teaching at MTSU. I really hope he runs and is like what happened with Nixon. I really hope he runs but I understand if not. But I think it's smart right now how nobody, but republican talkshow hosts, are talking about 2008. It's smart because then you never know. And I still have a feeling Kerry will be somewhere in a higher public office whether president or something closer.

22. the best we've got...
is still in the pipeline, fifteen years down the road. i can certainly transition with gore- he's made mistakes, and learned from them; he's been around government when it used to work a little better, he knows how to balance a budget, he was way ahead of the political curve on global warming, he volunteered for viet nam when his dad was a senator.

yeah, he took big tobacky $ even after his sister died from lung cancer; yeah he made some campaign mistakes.

boring? maybe, although i've seen some barnburners in the populist mode the last few years.

but man, if you think gore hasn't shown you nothin', and bush can be generally considered to have brought less than zero to the table, i'd like to see what "something" is for you.

there are warhorses out there, Kennedy, Byrd. Most of the rest of them are, for me, Pug Lite. Boxer, Obama, Feingold, soon Sanders... in the house Waxman, Conyers, most of the Black Caucus, i'd consider my own congressman tierney and barney frank. it's a short list, and it'll take a while for the cavalry to get there.

clark, gore... for me, no biden, no clinton (unless it's bill).

24. the best we've got?
After watching Gore campaign giving us his best shot I don't think he was impressive, noting that Clinton is a tough act to follow but he nonetheless far exceeded Bush in any/every way imagineable except one.

Gore wouldn't have allowed 9-11 to happen, Bush had gazillions in $upport which makes me believe that 9-11/invading Iraq was the plan from the get go and "they" needed someone willing to be the spokesman for the group.

Sure Gore won the election but Bush got the title and that's some mighty powerful maneuvering/manipulating.

Why would Gore be better then say, Clark? he too has military experience
although Clark voted for Nixon-Reagan-Bush 1 & 2 - when did Clark realize he was a Democrat??!!

25. thats my point...
i don't think the gore campaign was his best shot- it was a pathetic, overly cautious, over-consulted inside the beltway botch.

i personally think gore is a lot better than that. he fought until the supreme court took him out, although again he picked the wrong battlefield and the wrong strategy, he fought. he didn't cave and whimper, he didn't promise to have 10,000 lawyers on the ground to deal with what was expected- he tried to hold his ground.

i could be way wrong. i think he should grow his beard back, and let loose with a populist, western-based cut the crap presidential campaign- i see him much more in the mold of governor schweitzer than joe lieberman.

he would keep both coasts, pick off Louisiana and make serious headway in the west. he won last time. he'd at least keep all the states he had, and pick up some others.

i could go with clark. i like him very much, he's bright, straighforward, has great life and international experience and could make a truly great president.

then again, i'd vote for conyers in a new york minute.

how about that for a ticket- gore or clark and conyers...

sheesh.

40. hmmm.
and exactly which southern states did you think are possible democratic pickups in 2008. Which are in play?

Do i think clark and conyers would win? i dunno. Did i think Gore would win? Yes, and he did. Did I thin k Kerry would win? yes, and he did. and frankly, i'd rather reach out to the reality-based community than pander to the dlc.

clark has extensive experience at the strategic military planning and combat level. he also has considerable experience as a foriegn policy representative in some very tricky and complicated scenarios.

he has worked effectively with and managed budgets that dwarfed shrubs when he was elected, has demonstrated success in each assignment, is a friggin' brilliant guy besides.a rhodes scholar, if i recall.

but i bet you knew that before you posted. please. it's fine to reject clark on the basis of his not measuring up to whatever your standards are, but it is poor form not to qualify your standards.

and every person i ever met who was in the military tells me that you learn a lot, and damn quick.

and since this was an interesting exercise in suggesting a dream team, who might yours be.

27. great post, Uncle Joe
because his campaign was so ineptly managed, i had a hard time working up much enthusiasm for him, which is very sad, because he is a bright, thoughtful guy.

he learns. every day. imagine that, a politician who tries to learn about the issues.

we could do much worse.

the dems have no one with his governmental experience who isn't already bought and sold- the senator from MSNB comes to mind.

i remain interested in clark and gore, whcih surprises me a little since i pride myself on green and progressive bona fides. i want someone who is smart and honest, who can think big without getting swollen, and who can present the world with an image of america that is closer to what we can be than what we have become.

15. Gore probably is looking to be drafted
Not actively, but I think that's his "litmus test". If he's drafted, he's going to want a free hand to run the kind of race that this country hasn't seen since its beginning. He's going to want to cut loose, and to hell with propriety. He knows that the problems he discussed in Earth In The Balance in 1992 are decending on us, and it will take something beyond politics-as-usual to avert catastrophic crashes in civilization.

Nobody understands it like Gore does, and I say that with the full realization that we have had an embarrassment of riches in Democratic leadership in the last decade. All we need now is someone who is able to break the Republican machine and its defamation, lies, election rigging and media control.

And I think Al Gore is just the one to do it.

16. For sure
And this time we have Howard Dean running the DNC and not a person who has ties to the DLC. I remember reading how McAullife didn't allow any Bush bashing at the event (remember Al Sharpton went away from his speech he gave the DNC) and I also read an interview last year from Kerry's ex-wife Julia and she told how Kerry wanted to go after the SBVT guys but they didn't allow it. I think this next election so much will be different. Fifty state campaigning and the convention will be a lot better too. I can't wait and I think if Gore does run (I'm praying he does) and Dean is the chairman we will have a great campaign year! I'm sure Gore has learned a lot of how things are working now with the media and the like.

26. A Gore run will only give Limbaugh a chance to recycle old material
And it won't add anything new to the political landscape. It's a shame, because I like the guy and think he actually WAS elected president in 2000. He (and the country) got a raw deal thanks to the Supreme Court.

But you can't unspill a bottle of milk. You can only go forward.
