Baker claims misquote on N.O. housing loss
------------------
By GERARD SHIELDS

Advocate Washington bureau
------------------
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Richard Baker, R-Baton Rouge, accused a New York newspaper Friday of misquoting him about the destruction of low-income housing in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

The Wall Street Journal wrote that Baker was overheard telling lobbyists: "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did."

Baker, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, said in a statement that he was taken aback and perturbed by the comment, which he said was wrongly attributed to him.

Baker, a 20-year congressional veteran, said he has been part of hearings into poor housing conditions in New Orleans. One of those inquiries concluded that the housing authority in New Orleans squandered hundreds of millions of dollars and that families were forced to live in substandard, indecent conditions.

With that as a backdrop, Baker said, he expressed in a private conversation with a housing advocate and member of his staff: "We have been trying for decades to clean up New Orleans public housing to provide decent housing for residents, and now it looks like God is finally making us do it."

1. Uh huh sure.
And because they "squandered" all that money I am sure he thinks the housing authority should be cut off from federal funds. No oversight, just cut off. Compassion in action.

2. They "always" misquote
And everyone says okay and forgets about it.
However..if a Dem said this...regardless of how much they screamed misquote, their feet would be held to the fire.
It just gets more ridiculous as time goes by.

8. The old "misquoted" charge used to be easier to make
when they didn't have any way to GET IT ON TAPE. Sheesh. Back then it would be one's own word against the reporter's.
