GULFPORT, United States (AFP) - Embattled Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Mike Brown's resignation seemed to catch US President George W. Bush and the White House flat-footed. Asked about news reports that Brown had quit, Bush told reporters on a tour of the stormed-ravaged US Gulf Coast:
"I can't comment on something that you may know more about than I do." The president said he would find out more after boarding his official Air Force One airplane for the return flight to Washington. Brown drew fire over what has widely been criticized as Washington's too-little, too-late response to Hurricane Katrina, and was accused of exaggerating his qualifications on his resume.
"Maybe you know something I don't know, but, as you know, we've been working," said the president, who had raised eyebrows September 2 when he declared that Brown was "doing a heck of a job."
At the White House, aides scrambled to get confirmation that Brown was leaving his post, putting off any public comment until they could get their hands on his resignation letter.
