Long-term "refugee" settlement and the next election...
It would indeed be interesting to see into which states the mass of FEMA and Govt. Transported refugees from NO are being settled.

What's the effect of a herd of (HIGHLY probable) democrat voters, or at least a herd of angry-at-the-party-in-power voters, dumped in a state for (maybe) up wards of 5 years?

Does somebody feel like running the data for a correlation between the newly settled population and which accepting states are red and blue?

Does anybody wanna bet that these folk won't be able to vote next time around anyway....

Flavin

1. I would hope by November 2006..
...everyone affected by Hurricane Katrina will be in a position will they'll be able to vote.

I do think that by November 2006, most level-headed Americans are going to be so SICK of Mr. Bush (from Katrina, and countless other things) that Democrats will reap the benefits.

:)

5. It may make LA look like MS or AL

At least by margains of Republican victories. Kiss Landrieu's seat goodbye, and same with Blanco (whether or not she's falsely blamed for preparedness is besides the point because she only narrowly won her 2003 election with the help of NOLA.)

7. Not necessarily
Minus the NOLA vote Governor Blanco STILL would have won and Senator Landrieu should be able to shore up her vote minus the NOLA vote too. Check out this thread and my more in-depth response which is number 12 and entitled "Because"

6. I'm still trying to understand where all the people leaving
the large shelters are going. It starting to worry me in that NO may become a ghost town until they rebuild, and it doesn't sound like they're going to be rebuilding housing for the poor. Nagin's already stated the city is bankrupt....I think he's sold his soul...figuratively speaking...hey I'm an atheist.

And I've NEVER trusted Mayor Ray Reagan, but read the comments from the NOLA City Council members in the below link and read how they carpeted him as well...and they don't trust him either, but they also hold sway.

'Nagin says NO to decide reconstruction':

On edit: Dammit it's been moved. In essence the piece was about how the City Council members carpeted Ray Reagan for meeting the Uptown thugs in Dallas to plan rebuilding NOLA minus the black people. And the City Council members said don't you dare and we have a say in this too. It made me feel a bit better anyhow.
