Ontario bans Sharia Law & all other religious tribunals! Yippee.
They did the right thing. We cannot live in a country where one group is isolated with a different set of laws for them than others. Where it is okay to target one group for custom and others not-so-much. That would leave the door open to hate & neocons.

Thank you for acting like real legislatures and real government and standing by principles of equality.

I'm just saying...

1. I agree
They come to a democracy they should not expect the Gov't to change or add or alter laws just for their culture, beliefs. If they want that they might as well stay in their home country.

2. That's not what I meant. I meant that as a country - Canada is made
up of disparate cultures. And the laws need to be the same for everyone. The issue was Sharia law. There were already religiously based tribunals..just not Islamic ones (or Islamic ones of that nature).

So the big question was - what are you going to do when Sharia wants the same rights - but it is scary to most of us. Women especially.

I bit my tongue and said - let them have the same rights as other religions and see if it works... or take it away from all of them.

Nobody should get laws directed only at them.

And the government did the right thing. And took those "right to tribunal" rights away from everyone.

In these times when it seems politically expedient for neocons to find wedges - they will not be able to use religion in that way. All cultures have the same rights in my country. Neocons have already poisoned some churches in Canada with their hatred against gays. The government said "we are accepting of all cultures - everyone has the same rights". And there it is.
