Psychologist to help Katrina evacuees

ELKO - Psychologist Fred Klopfer, who reopened a practice in Elko last month, is heading for Montgomery, Ala., to help Hurricane Katrina victims.

He is back in Elko after two years in the Mississippi Delta, and his wife Susan is trying to help people in the little town of Drew, Miss., cope with Katrina evacuees.

Susan Klopfer is well-acquainted with Drew and the Delta after two years of research in the region's small towns and publication of two books on the civil rights movement in Mississippi.

"Because we were there, we can relate to what's happening. We know what those little towns are like," she said, reporting that churches and restaurants are helping victims who have no outside financial support. "If people want to help, I will put them in contact with the chamber or churches," Susan Klopfer said. She can be reached at (775) 777-8255.
