Traditionally many indeps vote repug. Just a SWAG, but this looks fairly close to balanced.

I'm really confused. what are these statistics for, and what do they mean?

5. They mean something like,

"if your Congressional election were held today, would you vote for the Democrat, the Republican, or neither?"

The nationwide poll, taken at face value, signifies a big margin in favor of Democratic Congressional candidates. So it's time to donate, work, get busy.

6. they mean that if you ask people if they would prefer a Dem or Rep

for congress, most people say "Dem". Unfortunaltely, that doesn't take districts into account. Most house districts are "safe" for the incumbant because of the way they are drawn.
