1. Well that explains why Northwest wasn't giving out peanuts or

pretzels on my flights last Sunday. You could buy trail mix for a buck though-I didn't and it drove them into bankruptcy...now I feel terrible, but I HATE trail mix.

3. fuel prices are crucial to airlines

Anytime fuel prices go up the airlines are screwed. They negotiate fuel contracts to try to lock in a favorable price, but the oil companies never let those contracts go very far out into the future. What is a big windfall for the oil companies is a big tailspin for airlines.

Most airlines were also leveraged to the hilt BEFORE 9/11. The reason American is not in bankrupcy is that they were only leveraged 65% or so prior to 9/11. Newer,leaner carriers like Southwest and Jet Blue are also better off. Even so, the airline business is an AWFUL business to be in. High costs. Highly sensitive to rising fuel costs. Lots of expensive gov't regulation.

For most pilots that constituted about $80K a year (at least), although not many management types will admit it.

Management at AA gave up around 8% in pay.

I am in the transportation business

So how come the Airlines can file for bankruptcy so easy,
but individuals who are struggling, have a hard time doing
that?

the main answer is because corporations pay attention to what's going on in government and "work the system" around the clock ... most individuals take their government for granted ...

job one for those who see what's going on is to wake-up the American people and educate them ...
