the Census Bureau's annual economic report, released in the midst of the Gulf Disaster, found that an additional 4.1 million Americans had slipped into poverty between 2001-2004

interesting that report came out in the midst of Katrina and REnquist dying...

13. YOur party controls the monetary policy.
Not the city, not the state. Not the dems in congress. Not the poor in NO and MS.

NOpe your beloved miserable failure of a pretzeldent and his cronies and their monetary policies. These policies have directly lead to the death of thousands.

What liberal government?

Congress? no
Whitehouse? no
Supreme court? NO

What liberal government are you talking about.

15. As usual, your wrong. Bush vacationed while Americans died.
YOu have both houses of congress, the whitehouse, and the supreme court and your going to tell me that the inept Federal Government is liberal? Your a joke.

2. Wait until these increased gas prices
spread to home heating costs, groceries, etc. Plus, the new Bankruptcy Bill, and higher minimum monthly payments, hasn't taken effect yet. I just heard on the news this morning that consumer spending was down for the month of August and that Labor Day Weekend travel was too.

5. Don't forget to look at the bankruptcy stats
According to http://www.bankruptcyaction.com the numbers of people and businesses filing for bankruptcy has totalled over 1.5 million each year for the last several years.

I presume these folks are now in poverty too.

I would love to know exactly how many of what salary levels exist now compared to what existed at the height of the dot com boom.

If the pols really want to know why government is so broke it is because the number of $100K+ jobs today is a mere fraction of what it used to be and those of us who used to be in them are now paying far less taxes.

I know at least 30 others who have been out of work for extended periods of time and whose skills are going to waste because they've taken bottom dollar jobs to fill-in and whose tax deductions reduce their taxes to nil because of their mortgage investments.

Many are just postponing the inevitable - their own bankruptcy.

16. numbers
Is that 4.1million based on this years guidelines for calculating poverty? Or some amalgam of the calculations for each year?

They change the calculation each year so the current methods may be even higher.
