Former GOP Senate leader Trent Lott may quit after Katrina

Hurricane Katrina's destruction of the Gulf Coast region is factoring into Sen. Trent Lott's (R-MS) decision about whether to seek a fourth term, as he weighs his own family's financial situation with the dire needs of many of his constituents and neighbors, Roll Call's Mark Preston will report in Thursday's editions, RAW STORY has learned.

The story was first reported by Capitol Buzz.

Lott, who was forced to step down from his position as Senate Majority Leader after what many viewed as racist remarks at a birthday party for former Sen. Strom Thurmond, tells the paper it will be at least three months before he makes a decision. Excerpts from Roll Call's story follow.

I would have thought the embarrassment would have been too great to return to the Senate after having to relinquish that kind of power.

The conservative philosophy is based on the concept that people can be self-sufficient and that those who are good and work hard, succeed and are rewarded with all the goods society can provide. On top of this, they also credit these successful people with moral superiority and applaud them as upstanding pillars of the community.

Lott is not really in bad shape, he's simply insignificantly worse shape than he had been. But he may see, that he and his community needed the help of the government and outsiders. If he has the courage to re-examine his beliefs, he might find it best to stay and fight to get what is really needed to fix Mississippi. He may see that some, genuinely in need, simply had bad luck and work to provide opportunities.

It had to have thrown some conservatives that he on TV and in the Senate took the action of publicly thanking Kerry for sending some aid that he and his staff helped distribute. I would guess there were some shocked people in Mississippi - after last year.

Or he can leave and become a lobbyist pulling in all the chips he has from years in the Senate (and Republican leadership.) - which would seem more likely. It would be good though if he could change.
