12 dems vote NO in Dorgan amdt protecting labor laws in trade negotiation
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 01:14 PM by Mass

Why would any democrats vote against that? (amazing when many Reps and Landrieu and Pryor voted for it).

I understand it for those who voted for CAFTA, but Clinton, Schumer, and Obama voted AGAINST CAFTA.
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00232

Purpose: To prohibit weakening any law that provides safeguards from unfair foreign trade practices.

2. Perhaps they expect the "strengthening" of labor provisions
to come from other quarters? How?

9. Obama was oversold as some kind of Democratic "savior"
Merely because he's African-American and makes emotional speeches. But in reality, there's absolutely nothing special about him. Just your garden variety politician.

17. I notice he seems to show up on these kinds of lists a lot.
At least more than I would expect, given how popular he seems to be around here.

19. It is what I call a DU score
It represents a percentage of votes each senator cast that agrees with DUers. I only counted passage of bills and senate confirmations (no procedural votes or amendment votes).

The full methodology is here:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/10/133312/333

I scored these myself because ADA ratings do not reflect how much of a progressive a Senator is (I argue faulty methodology), read the comments on the page.

I am glad I did this because it cuts through so much BS rhetoric we see here on DU. Without vote records, anyone can be villified/deified.

20. Ah. So Harkin has a really good score
Cool. He's my senator, but doesn't seem to get all that much attention on DU.

22. No, he does not get enough attention on DU..he should
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 05:00 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
His score did surprise me, but it made me happy at the same time. He deserves a LOT of credit. His only black mark was not standing up with Boxer to defy the Ohio vote.....that's IT!!

Not a bad record, though. I would vote for him for President any day.

15. It's one thing to be in favor of free trade but to sell out workers
throughout the world is reprehensible. If we refuse to insist on wage standards, environmental protections and prohibitions on child labor and slave shop conditions, we are aiding and abetting the rush to the bottom. I used to think that globalization was a way to lift the living standards of people around the world while moving the US work force into the next generation of technological advancement. The way it is being done is to promote slave factories in Saipan while robbing the American worker of his/her ability to support a family. This is to be expected from Republicans but it is disgusting when done by those who claim to be from the Party of Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy and Johnson.
