If you watched the President's speech, you may not have noticed but you have just witnessed a miraculous event. George Bush has finally hung himself. As a Democrat, the expected shock and awe of yet another attack on "values" and "patriotism" failed to rear its ugly, yet familiar head. He spoke about rebuilding a shattered region. He spoke about how the winds of the Hurricane swept bare the veil of poverty and then undeniably linked poverty and race. He spoke about spending billions of dollars and ensuring oversight from both parties {I assume he meant Democrats}. He talked about how he was ultimately responsible for his role and that he fully supported an investigation into what went wrong. If this speech had been given by someone I found even the slightest bit credible, I would have been pleased with the response.
Since I know who Bush is and more importantly, what he is, I don't believe a word he said. But the fact that it was not an affront to my Progressive ideology also assures me that his "people" are going to lose their collective minds over this. When Chris Mathews says this is a speech reminiscent of LBJ or FDR, you can rest assured his people are going to go completely crazy over this. Without the support of his base, Bush is finished. We have just witnessed the political suicide of President Bush.
