Media Reaction to *'s Speech?

How has the entire media reacted to Bush's speech? Who is spinning it for him? Any surprises? I know Chris Matthews adores him and Scarborugh and Tucker think he is a liberal now. Ha. And Ted Koppel, douschbeag, thinks Bush has made "significant progress". Brian Williams wants to know where the money is coming from. Anything else?

Did the media do any polls with people to see how they felt about the speech? (The ABC parking lot with black people who loved him doesn't count). Sometimes they do that for Bush's speeches, they did it for the debates, etc.

UPDATE: Howard Fineman and another woman on MSNBC are spinning it saying Bush is finally admitting mistakes and he is announcing sweeping programs, that Kerry didn't criticize that but just his competency, etc.

6. He's right...it was underwhelming.

Maybe it was the timing, maybe it was that he didn't address how he would pay for everything, lots of questions come to mind. Seems like it was a speech that should have taken place a week ago. Glad he spoke, but I was far from impressed. I have such a hard time believing him.

11. Welcome to DU! It WAS underwhelming. One thing I was confused

about was their reference to a David Gregory observation - speaking of "contrition." I didn't hear any contrition. I listened to the whole thing. Even took notes. Didn't hear ONE THING that sounded like contrition. Saw a lot of openings where he COULD have been a grownup and could have owned up to a few things and genuinely apologized for being AWOL for most of last week. This speech, itself, was a week late in coming, and staged ridiculously. That long green expanse of beautifully manicured lawn? That lovely building behind him that appeared untouched by any storms of any sort? Where the hell did he think he was? That point was brought out, by the way. And Rita Cosby of all people, was shown with a group of displaced workers who, she said, voiced skepticism at what they'd heard.

10. tweety matthews was already excusing bush before the speech by blaming

blanco: asked a (D) Representative from Mississippi who would he blame for the katrina disaster if the Feds kept calling Blanco and asking what do you need, what do you need, what do you need, and she never did call them back. The guy from Mississippi said that regardless of what Blanco had done, the Feds had a responsibility and that they could override what she was doing. If she wasn't doing her job, they could do their job by, more or less saying--move out of the way (paraphrasing here) we are stepping in. He said (also paraphrasing) they sat on their behinds and did nothing prior to the storm--storm preparedness, when they should have. Then Tweety said, well if the Feds had just gone into NO and moved Blanco out of the way, wouldn't you have criticized them for that? the guy from Mississippi said, No. Not if they had followed protocol. There is a protocol in place for what they need to do when a storm is coming (storm preparedness) and they didn't do it. Tweety shut up then,ignored what the guy said and went on to something else. Tweety is disgusting, quite frankly.

Did he explain why he issued an executive order to make sure that the workers can be paid the least amount of money? He's a liar. He's always been a liar. He though if he gave away money, we'd all forget the bodies and the horrors in Iraq etc. Takes more than money to erase the memories he's given us.

Nothing they say means anything ~ they have TOLD us that lying to the people is alright ~ 'noble lies' I think they call them. Iow, we're too stupid to understand why they kill people etc. so it's best to hide the bodies and just tell us everything's okay.

Only problem is they really DID think we were stupid, and unimportant. It's a hard lesson the neocons are learning, people do matter and once they wake up, they get angry!

12. I saw Koppel's comments right afterward

He seemed favorably impressed, then they went to some guy outside the Astrodome, who interviewed a bunch of black people, all of whom said that Bush's speech sounded good to them.

For some reason, though, ABC's analysis ended before they had a chance to broadcast just how Mr. Bush planned to pay for all those pie-in-the-sky proposals. I'm sure they'll get around to it . . . someday.
