Smells the rat.....

On President Bush's speech
Wes Clark's picture
Posted by Wes Clark on September 15, 2005 - 10:58pm.

First of all I am grateful that the President spoke to the nation this evening. I wish it had been sooner to rally the American people. I wish he acted with the kind of leadership, foresight, inspiration, and attention to detail at a time when lives could have been saved and the recovery far easier.

I appreciate ideas like empowerment zones, training, relocation, and urban homesteads, but the devil is in the details. Who benefits, and who decides who benefits? The rumors are rampant. "Opportunity of a lifetime." "New and better New Orleans." I have no doubt there will be plenty of private money for rebuilding. The wealthy are awash in capital, but I would hope the federal government will ensure that the rebuilding of New Orleans favors the New Orleaneans that want their homes, their lives, and their city back.

And I think we all need to remember that as tragic as the situation in New Orleans is, there are tens of thousands that lost their property and lives along the Gulf Coast. In many respects these small communities need far more because they had less of a municipal framework for disaster to begin with.

1. We should be very distrubed - they are putting the evacuees in
religious camps from which they plan to profit and they are probably going to take over their former homes and rentals of the evacuees and create the grandest religious foundation imaginable to 'save' the rest of the city and rid it of gays and Blacks. They are not about helping, they are about taking advantage of tragedy for their own control and profit. They are a farce - they are lecherous criminals. They have no credibility.

5. Now, Roland.... you pulled that out of context....

The entire paragraph"

"For the good of the country, I hope we can keep these two issues
separate. As I have said previously, a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq would be a massive defeat for America as well as our friends and allies in the region, ultimately increasing the dangers America will face in the years ahead. More to come." This is from a man with military and diplomatic experience. I think we can assume he knows that of which he speaks....

I know we all have our particular issues and bugaboos -- Lord knows I do! -- but, it's slightly dishonest to pull a snippet of a sentence out of an entire essay. Without the context, even I would have rolled my eyes, and I admire the men greatly. By all means, take issue with what bothers you, but if you are going to post a phrase that will seem inflammatory or negative without the context, consider adding enough so that the discussion it creates can be honest and instructive for all?

Thanks ahead of time for doing this in the future! :)

TC

7. Not enough room in the subject line for the whole thing
And I still think it's horsehockey.

There's no win situation in Iraq. Ain't happening. Asshole Bush fucked up and he fucked up big. No putting this genie back in the bottle.

8. Just saying, is all...
I never argue with people about Iraq. It's a horrendous situation no matter what. And I totally understand the feeling for a complete pull-out. We all want our soldiers home ASAP.

12. Even Feingold is saying December 2006......that's not immediate...
Pulling troops out like in a month or two might very well and easily leave us facing a Nuclear Middle East in just a few years, a la Former Soviet Union. We move out too hastily and in a loud manner, and Iran and Syria and Saudi Arabia make their own nice plans and move in....shortly followed by Pakistan....each taking a piece of Iraq via a bloody proxy civil war. Hundreds of thousands more innocent Iraqis could end up dead......and the eyes rolling you do now, will be done by those of us who understood that this ain't no little game we are playing here. The stakes are much higher at this point than just being able to tell our Boy Prince "I told you so" and think only of our boys and not the people that we invaded so boldly.

Its the big picture.....not the instand fast food satisfaction that we need to focus on.

Are you supporting that we just leave Iraq now hoping that it might all work out? Don't bet your house on it being all right, is all that I can say.

Clark has been right about all that has come to pass in Iraq to date....so don't think he hasn't thought about this. He knows that his is a unpopular position with the Democratic base....as the clamoring for "Bring our Troops Home NOW!" continues to grow and grow.

But he has taken unpopular positions before.....because he understands that it can't be all about "US" and our soldieirs at this point just because it has become convenient based on the polls.

No one wins this one way of the other...but we can't just put people that we so maliciously invaded right on the train tracks with rapidly moving train coming and just wave byebye! That's not even the moral thing to do at this point.

Bush's moves have been disastrious.....but let's not help him create a world that could literally blow up!

Feingold's 12/06 is immediate enough for me.....

6. I meant to say that I am very glad Wes spoke up on Bush's speech...
Wes ended this essay with the words "More to come." So, to those who feel this was not expansive enough, my guess is there will be more on this subject soon.

Wes is a "big picture" thinker... and and extremely respectful and compassionate. That's a lot of why I support him!

Could you clarify for me? Who is "the rat"?

If it's Bush, I agree.

If it's Wes, obviously I don't.

11. You betcha- Wes smells a rat when the rat is
giving a speech because rats give off an odor when they speak.

Sorry, the net is an odd place for humor, or lack of it in my case..

But, since you asked, I think General Clark is a bright man, some say near genius, with proven leadership skills, a no non-sense honest American who has proven himself in uniform and led NATO, rather than leading his frat brothers to a beer.

Peace out. :)

14. Giving Rove $200 BILLION to rebuild is outrageous...
Thats the most shocking thing I heard about Bush's "big" plan for NO,letting super THUG KKkarl Rove run loose and fast with 200 Billion. Hell, you could skim a billion off the top of that and never be noticed,it was done in Iraq and NO ONE knows where it went....

The 'quick counter' ability he's shown recently will be quite useful should he decide to run again in '08.

17. Watch for the recent USSC ruling in action
I'm talking about the one that allows government to acquire private property from citizenry by fiat and hand it over to developers.

I think you're going to see a lot of that action in New Orleans. This disaster will be the big payoff to the Republican fatcats that foisted their shill as president on us, and they'll use this opportunity to further rob the treasury.

18. Good point
They certainly may try to use powers of eminent domain.

Didn't * speak of giving government land to displaced residents? I read someplace that there is not much govt owned land in the NOLA area. Could there actually be a good use of ED in NOLA?

BTW - I think the SCOTUS was totally incorrect in the ruling you refer to.

20. Of paramount importance. Before any grandiose
schemes to rebuild New Orleans as a show-piece for far-right, corporatist capitalism, the residents need to have their property restored to them - with interest. What if they don't want a corporatist developers' utopia?
