Subject: Bush Lied About Charity
President Bush told us last night that a portion of the $100 million collected by Clinton and Bush thus far would go to houses of worship to reimburse them for emergency work they have done. Earlier he told us the money would go to the governors of the states affected.
Is this not fraud?
The public that gave the $100 million had no opportunity to investigate the churches that will be receiving these funds. I had an experience myself researching a charity years ago that solicited money from my mother. It turned out that a very small percentage of funds supported those in need. The money went to a “ministry” that paid $500,000 salary each to the minister and his wife.
I applaud the churches that stepped forward to feed the hungry. I assumed however that the very definition of charity implies “out of my own pocket.” Now we discover that the funds collected will be another example of “no bid contracts” going to the president’s political supporters.
Charity money does not belong to George W. Bush to dole out as he sees fit.
