Subject: Bush Lied About Charity

President Bush told us last night that a portion of the $100 million collected by Clinton and Bush thus far would go to houses of worship to reimburse them for emergency work they have done. Earlier he told us the money would go to the governors of the states affected.

Is this not fraud?

The public that gave the $100 million had no opportunity to investigate the churches that will be receiving these funds. I had an experience myself researching a charity years ago that solicited money from my mother. It turned out that a very small percentage of funds supported those in need. The money went to a “ministry” that paid $500,000 salary each to the minister and his wife.

I applaud the churches that stepped forward to feed the hungry. I assumed however that the very definition of charity implies “out of my own pocket.” Now we discover that the funds collected will be another example of “no bid contracts” going to the president’s political supporters.

Charity money does not belong to George W. Bush to dole out as he sees fit.

1. If you are donating to the hurricane victims how is it siphoned off
I don't understand this, it sounds like a confidence trick.

3. It depends,

If the money goes to the governors, who then decide to give a portion to churches, there is no deception. I recall the original statement that it would be given to governors to use as they deem best.

If the money is now not all going to governors, then yes, I believe the donors have the right to demand a return of their money.

I recall after 911, the Red Cross said all the money would go to 911 victims and families. Once they received that huge outpouring, they tried to say, hey, let's use some of this money for other disasters. They were called on the carpet for it. I remember the then president was forced out over it.

4. If he spoke, he lied
If he spoke about a charity, he lied about that charity. Duh.
