Iraq's Costs Worry Americans, Poll Indicates

By Raymond Hernandez and Megan Thee / New York Times

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=4132

WASHINGTON - With Hurricane Katrina already costing the federal government tens of billions of dollars, more than 8 in 10 Americans are very or somewhat concerned that the $5 billion being spent each month on the war in Iraq is draining away money that could be used in the United States, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The poll also shows that nearly half of Americans say that the war is distracting President Bush from addressing problems at home, though an equal number do not share that concern.

Support for the war in Iraq has fallen to an all-time low, according to the poll. Only 44 percent now say the United States made the right decision in taking military action against Iraq, the lowest rating since the question was first asked by this poll more than two years ago.

The findings underscore the difficulty President Bush faces as he calls on the public to show patience and resolve with the American effort in Iraq, particularly in the face of a persistent insurgency, punctuated this week by the killings of nearly 200 people in coordinated assaults in Baghdad. When asked how long American troops should remain in Iraq, for example, 52 percent of people interviewed called for an immediate withdrawal, even if that means abandoning President Bush's goal of restoring stability to that country.

1. All this article proves to me is what selfish fucks Americans are
Golly gosh! This war is costing too much money!! Who will cover our asses???

Nevermind the moral implications of pre-emptive war..it just costs too much money!
Nevermind the INNOCENT Iraqis who died believing America was liberating them only to have their schools, infrastructure and society destroyed.
Nevermind the HISTORY destroyed by this war.
Nevermind the moral implications of going to war against a CONTAINED THREAT when every last reason offered turned out to be a lie.

Nevermind the nearly 2000 troops dead and the 15,000 troops injured.

The goddamn war just costs too much money so now we don't like it.

6. Ok, and your point is?
Well, yeah...we ARE selfish fucks. We have become so closely identified with our capitalist society that capitalism is like a religion of its own. Most people vote with their pocketbooks...or their Bibles. KKKarl Rove was smart enough to appeal to both, all the while Bush has allowed corporate America to run amok. The thing that REALLY pisses me off is that people cannot LOOK AHEAD.

Take New Orleans. $2.5 billion spent three years ago would have saved this country $200 billion now. Do you think ANYBODY will learn that lesson?? Fuck NO. And those tax cuts. Do you think the average guy can think past the fact that he is going to get $300 whole dollars back from those cuts to the fact that his kids are going to have to pay back $150,000 a piece down the road...somehow?? Fuck NO.

The trick is in appealing to the morons enough to get elected while still maintaining some modicum of ethics and steering the country in the right direction.

8. Americans aren't any more selfish than any other nationality
Sociologists have done studies for years. We place the same moral valuation on money as Europeans do.

7. the *question* was *about* money
That is why "Americans" answered as "they" did. Americans are the ones marching with Cindy and on the 24th about the massive loss of life.

9. Of course
They don't care about the lies or about innocent people dying or anything like that. Only money. Me, me, me. Same thing with Bush's Social Security "plan".

2. Took them long enough
to come to that conclusion. It's always about the money isn't it. So much for the 'culture of life'.

4. What about the Irag Oil
I had read at www.worldbank.org that we,or they are producing 1.2 to 1.4 million barrels a day, say at 30.00 to 40.dollars a barrel comes to 36. million a day or more than 13 billion a year. ( those figures are at 30. 00 a barrel), where is this money going, who owns the oil. And if I remember correctly, * said the oil would help for the cost of the war. Somebody please, direct me to this answer.
