ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Outrage mounted in Pakistan and abroad yesterday over President Pervez Musharraf's comment that many Pakistanis felt that crying rape was an easy way to make money and move to Canada.

Prime Minister Paul Martin of Canada has already condemned the remarks made by Musharraf, who is in the United States having addressed the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

Musharraf told The Washington Post in an interview published Tuesday that Pakistan should not be singled out on rape issues as other countries had the same problems. ''You must understand the environment in Pakistan. . . . This has become a money-making concern. A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped," the Post quoted Musharraf as saying.

''If this attitude, of blaming rape and other crimes against women on women themselves and ridiculing NGOs that take up such issues, begins to travel upward from ignorant mullahs and male chauvinists to permeate the higher echelons of the administration, then God help us," it said.

Musharraf: 'No need to apologise'

<snip>
During a press conference at the offices of Time magazine, Gen
Musharraf said that he was not insensitive enough to accuse raped
women of using their situation to make money.

He said the newspaper had misinterpreted what he had said and had
misquoted him.

'Verbatim'

But Glenn Kessler, co-author of the Washington Post article, told
the BBC News website: "The president's comments were tape recorded
and they were quoted verbatim and in context."

"The article did not try to sensationalise the quotes and in fact
they were not the main focus of the article," he said.

3. Hatred against women is getting a free pass among the self-employed
in the U.S. again. I'm seeing more and more of it all the time. Those who are (previously, closet) sexists have, like the hate-mongers, been empowered by the new environment in this country.

It's getting more and more difficult for self-employed women to hold their own in business.
