WASHINGTON -- As the rebuilding begins in New Orleans, Republicans are exploring ways to retool a key environmental law to restore communities devastated by natural disasters.
Most federal laws allow for environmental protections to be eased in emergencies, but the trigger is rarely used.
Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif., chairman of the House Resources Committee, said this week he is considering a broad approach to change the National Environmental Policy Act, a key law that requires the government to seek public input into how its actions would affect the environment.
Whether cleaning up after hurricanes, floods or wildfires, some lawmakers say the government needs more wiggle room from environmental restrictions to help communities recover.
