could answer a question for me. Since we were his old church before he moved, he did mention a bit here and there about his mom making him go to church.... But he ALSO mentioned that he and several other people have a Bible study group that meets in the Senate on Thursday afternoons. I didn't want to ask because I couldn't remember the darned name of the corrupt religious group that has a house that the senators/reps can stay in. Can anybody fill me in? I was wondering if it was part of the same thing.
It might not be because then he went off on how alot of the people in DC claim to be religious, but really aren't -- that you can tell not by what comes out of peoples mouth, but how they treat people of all backgrounds and the deeds that they do.
His opening info was about how the Gov. association has 3 day orientation for new governors and their wives. Everyone works together, eats together, shares concerns, etc. And by the end of 3 days, you've made a number of new friends. He said there is nothing like that in DC. When new senators or reps come in, their orientation lasts at most 2 hrs and they essentially cover the fact that Dems are the low life and go on one side of the aisle, and Repubs are the leaders and in control and go on the other side of the aisle. He said from that point on, all the "orientation" is how to fight each other. This last session, he and several other's got Frist's and Hastert's approval to have an orientation meeting for new reps. The people organizing tried to pick people to talk who were good at working "across the aisle". He said he figured they didn't consider it a liability because every Tuesday (I believe) they have their Repub meeting and whip or twist them all into line again.
He said the Dems pick reps they love or think can do them well, the Repubs pick people who will tow the line and follow party protocols and agenda.
He said he absolutely hates the politics of DC. Said Katrina spending needs equally bipartisan oversite, as well as the Administration response needs an independent investigation. He said there was absolutely nothing wrong with FEMA 5 years ago, and he touched on how good FEMA response was under Clinton/Witt. He should know since he was our gov. and had to work with them. He went on to say in the last 5 years, something terrible has happened in DC. Didn't elaborate much on that, but the audience shook heads in agreement.
He also touched on the fact that for Delaware, we are building a Biodiesel plant in Claymont. He said approx 75% of Venezuela's power is made from things they grow and we should be moving in the same direction. Astropower, which as governor, he helped get off the ground (solar power business - the 3rd largest in the US at the time) was going to go bankrupt. He worked with them to identify a corporation to bail them out. GE stepped in. There is real concern that MBNA will leave DE. Alot of jobs there would be in jeopardy.
He closed his talk with "Let me tell you, we are in deep trouble my friends. If we can't turn America around, we are on the road to complete and total ruin."
I came out of there knowing that he is a good politician, but not a strong personality like will be required to break thru the corruption that exists. He could be used well in the rebuilding, but not in the taking back of the government for the Dems. It also reaffirmed and validated for my husband everything that I've told him about that I've read on DU.
He did mention Soc. Sec. regarding which CPI index was used. He also talked about using life expectency. THAT sounded like a cop-out to me. Didn't mention a THING to do with the cap - which to me is the sane thing to do. All in all, he answered questions for about 45 min. His driver and security were trying to herd him out the door since he had another appt.
